how small is too small for a family of 4?

Growing up in the 70's, it seemed that most of my friends lived in houses that were in the 1,100-1,500 sq. ft. range in most of the New Orleans area. I think my parent's house was about 1,300 sq. ft. and had 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

At the time, it didn't seem small. It had a kitchen, small dining room, living room and the three bedrooms/2 baths. It also had a carport. At the time, there was no such thing as "open concept" as every room was walled off - as was the case in just about any home you walked into.

Looking back, it seems tiny. Nowadays, anything short of 2,500 sq. ft. for a family of four seems small. And, most homes are built with at least 3 bathrooms.

6 and 3. The house does have some areas for entertaining outside, so it doesn’t feel that small honestly.

Personally and currently doing a lot of research and planning from something no larger than 1200 or so. What's more, possible Earthbag with hay bale hybrid. Southern Colorado in the Pagosa Springs, Creede, Durango or Crestone area. Wherever I can find the best resourced land to suit what I want. Had enough of city life, boys.

Our daughter is 5 and my wife and o are already talking about this. We can’t wait to be in a condo or small home with less to clean

Our 2nd house is around 2500 sq ft with a big back porch and garage.

The oldest moved out a year or two after we bought it and now it feels like a giant waste of space for me, the wife and a 12 yr old. We have a few rooms we rarely even go into.

I'd be fine in a garden home.

My current home (1st house) is 1,325. Just me and the wife and it feels small, because we dedicated one room to be the dining room, and it is rarely used. Not my decision, but whatever.

If you MUST do it, then a 1500-2000 SQ/FT house, 3 bed 2 bath could be done. But it won’t be fair to the kids as they grow up and get older. They will want some privacy and not have to share a bathroom

That might be the most first world thing I read today.

We had a teenager and a newborn/toddler in a home smaller than that for 7 years. They had their own rooms.

We all made do with what we had growing up.

I was in a family of 4 that lived in a single-wide until middle school. In a way, I'm thankful for that because I can easily deal with small spaces.

The thought of cleaning and maintaining a 2,500+ sq ft home just doesn't appeal to me.

But, everyone has their own preferences in the end.

Cleaning is not supposed to appeal to you... it appeals to the Help.

That's about the size of our 2nd house and I agree. I wish we'd have gone smaller.

Let's be honest here, women are the only reason people are posting 2000+. A single guy just needs a shitter, a bed, a fridge, and a couch. Women need places to hang up "Live, Laugh, Love" signs and pottery.

My family lives in a 1,400 sq ft. town home. Family of 3 (9 month old).

No garage or real yard either.

It's tight, but it works just fine. 2 beds, 2.5 bath, great patio, new construction with tall ceilings downstairs.

Now, 1 more kid and we're outta here.

It's just the wife and I. About 1500 square feet would be more than enough.

Ours was 1140... First house I bought for myself when I was still single.

2 bedroom, 1 bath...

Got really small after our twins started walking...

I grew up in 1100 sq ft with a family of 5. I thought we had a big house. When it’s what you have, it’s not a big deal.
