A patio makes all the difference in the world. I went with storage space and bedroom space vs entertainment space. I don't like to entertain but space is nice to have when you need to.

1800 and under suck entertaining visitors.

I think it depends on the floor plan and covered outdoor space. I'm 1700SF with killer outdoor space (approx 900 SF) and its perfect for entertaining.

Our first house was 1390 sq ft for a family of 4. Wasn't a big deal for us.

I wound up buying the old shotgun house I grew up in and it was for 5 of us, 3 kids and our parents and that house wasn't but 1100 sq. ft. at best---and with 1 bathroom.

My wife grew up in a house not much bigger and there were 9 in her family with 7 kids and the parents, they were fancy, they had 1 1/2 baths.

I remember one of my aunts and uncles living in a "huge" house of about 2000 sq. ft. out in the country, but they had 10 kids. Also 1 1/2 baths.

As the years have passed, the houses have gotten bigger for the average family.

I have a nice patio but it's not covered. This is part of our renovations. Do you have an outdoor fireplace?

I think I would enjoy that.

I like some of them tiny homes, but only if there's plenty of land.

If I was single, I'd could make do with around 800 sq. ft., but my shop/storage area would need to be close to 2K sq. ft.-------unless I got rid of all my tools and toys.

Living room, dining room, and an outdoor area can easily fit into a house this size.

Are you entertaining an infantry regiment?

My house just isn't laid out to entertain. The kitchen and living room are relatively small in comparison to my bedroom and storage space.

There are ways to make a smaller space workable. But with 3 young kids, I'd need at least 2,500 SF to store all their shite. Same with 2, probably. Once the kids are older and they don't have giant arse toys anymore, 2,000 would be easily doable, but the layout would have to be perfect.

I hear you but we are trying something radically different from our parents (or at least I am, trying to get everyone on board)! Anything in the house that doesn't get used/worn/played with in a year gets donated. Gonna try to stop storing old clothes, toys, etc. My parents and grandparents grew up with much less than we have, but their hard work has helped to put us in a position where we can buy new stuff when we need it. Want to focus less on our "stuff" which means less wasted space, and more on living a healthy, happy life.........

..........So I know its big talk and easier said than done but I want to try!

I went from a 400sf downtown apartment to a 3500sf two story home. I loathe living in such a big house with just two of us. There are rooms we haven't even been into in over a month. If the house didn't have such sentimental value to my wife we would be living in a single story cottage, half the size of our house now, with a pool in the same neighborhood.

My SO and I (no kids) are moronically looking to get ourselves into that same situation. If we want certain amenities, layouts, and want to live in certain neighborhoods it's what we're stuck with.

If we weren't both so high-strung and picky, we'd be better off building.

Our house a little more than half of that and there are rooms I don't go in for months.

We're in 1700 now and have almost zero reason to upgrade. Other than my dream of either of our parents coming to live with us in their later years, my reasons are purely materialistic.

Another factor why my wife does not want to move. My MIL is getting up there in age and will have to move in one day. She already said she'll pay to convert the garage into a MIL suite. It will be nice to have her here when we have a kid as well. Maybe when I'm in my 50's i'll get my downsized dream home.

In today’s times, it really is impossible for a two parent, two kid family to live in anything less than 2500-3000 sq. ft. and be emotionally happy.

We live quite well in our 1,800 sq ft house, with two kids. It only starts to feel small when they have their buddies over. We do have a 1,200 garage/man-cave (where the booze and best electronics are) and are on a few acres w trails behind us.

We are in the process of buying a foreclosure that has 2,200 sq feet, so I'm sure it'll feel like a mansion. On more land of course (and bigger garage).
