I don't think some of us celebrate him, but rather some of us empathize with him and project some of our own insecurities on to him. When you hear his radio messages, it's very human. He's not overtly deranged sounding. He has this peace and acceptance, but he's so broken, and it's sad. We see how the modern world could drive a young man to do this, and we recognize that had a few things gone differently in our own lives, then maybe we would be the one up there flying the plane. I don't agree with what he did, but I understand where he's coming from.

Sky King is a reminder that we're all a little broken inside.

Check on your friends today.

Everyone is fighting a battle you probably don’t see.

Rest easy Sky King.

Leaving behind people who loved him and putting people at risk and that ATC controller through hell makes what he did selfish and tragic. It doesn't make him a psychopath.

Psychopathy is a long-term pattern of callousness, manipulation and lack of empathy. What you’re describing is evidence of a person in a catastrophic crisis, not evidence that he was a psychopath.

Was Sky King more of an online sensation when it happened because I did not hear a peep about it when it happened and I'm a pretty avid news consumer.

Definitely dominated the news cycle for more than 24 hours when it happened.

I have never felt so frustrated by or with anything that I considered killing myself. Killing someone else, sure. But not myself.

FIFY. These same people you are describing with their angst and disillusionment are too fricking scared and or lazy to change their lives. Sorry, can't identify with that bullshite. If your existence is so awful, do something about it. Preferably something that doesn't harm you or put others at risk.
I have sympathy for people who are so paralyzed by depression or anxiety or any of the other mental incapacities that can make someone nonfunctioning. But people like this guy are an insult to those who are truly mentally ill.

no, not all of us. The vast majority of us are just going through life with its ups and downs, profits and losses, highs and lows. And we're doing just fine. Nothing is broken. We aren't running out to steal an airplane and crash it into the ground. Or doing anything else to cause self harm. This idea that we are all fricked up and broken is why we shouldn't celebrate this dude. It isn't normal and he wasn't some sort of hero. Nor is your observation remotely correct.

Is it ok to kind of agree with both of you?

He could have injured and killed many people, and this incident would be remembered much differently if he had have. But the fact that he did not allows our brain to have a little bit more empathy for him. There are plenty of instances in human history where someone did something dangerous, potentially injuring and killing people, but didn't, and they are romanticized.

He essentially committed suicide, which generally should never be romanticized, but in reality there are stories and instances across centuries that have been.

Doesn't make it right, no one should eve do something like that, but human nature and perception steers our thinking into a different, deeper direction in instances like these. Its an interesting and complicated human psychological paradox for sure.

Your first sentence pretty much undermines everything that follows. You’ve never been in that state of mind, yet you’re confidently explaining the motives and character of someone who was.

“I’ve never considered killing myself, therefore people who do are just too scared or lazy to change their lives” is just declaring your own experience universal.

Calling him an “insult to those who are truly mentally ill” is especially strange. A man stole an airliner, spent an hour talking calmly about how damaged and hopeless he felt, and then deliberately crashed it with himself aboard. Whatever label you want to put on him, that is not the behavior of a psychologically healthy person simply refusing to pull himself up by his bootstraps.

Nobody is saying what he did was responsible, harmless, or something people should emulate. The point is that people recognized the despair and alienation underneath it. You don’t have to have contemplated suicide yourself to have empathy. And “I’ve never experienced anything remotely like that, therefore everyone who does is full of shite” is about the weakest shite imaginable to justify judging it.

That gif was in response to me, "I don't care" guy that keeps posting. I've said it was tragic and sad but resonated with people going through shite. That's hardly celebrating it.

Holy hell, it seems like yesterday it was the anniversary. Fly high sky king. He gave his family some final words, did something he loved going out, and didnt leave his family a body with a bullet hole in it. Plus he stuck it to an insurance company in his final act. Still incredibly sad.

That plane was roughly a $20,000,000 loss, not to mention the costs of cleanup and recovery on that island. This is nowhere near a "no harm, no foul" situation.
