Skip Bertman, Roger Cador speak out against proposed St. George; 'we stay together as one'

Ah yes, because the St. George region is why the school system sucks and of course they are short sighted in saying a city forming to keep people from leaving the parish is going to stunt the parish's growth.

Two local baseball coaching legends voiced their concerns about proposed St. George split. Skip Bertman and Roger Cador, were joined by Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome on Thursday at Highland Road Park to discuss the vote in this month's election. Early voting started last week Bertman is a former LSU baseball head coach from 1984-2001 and was also the school's athletic director from 2001-2008. Cador was the Southern baseball head coach from 1985-2017. Both have won multiple national championships with their respective schools. "It's more important that we stay together as one," Bertman said. "That's the winner for us: unity." Cador echoed Bertman's thoughts, adding: "This is about Baton Rouge and the mayor doing a good job. When you stay together good things happen."

Thursday's press conference follows one the city-parish held two days before early voting kicked off for the Oct. 12 elections where the proposal to incorporate the city of St. George will appear on the ballot for voters living in the defined boundaries of the proposed city in southeast East Baton Rouge.
quote:
At that press event last week, Broome received help in her quest to block the controversial incorporation from business leaders who claimed creating another city would adversely impact the parish's school system and stunt the city-parish's trajectory of growth due to all the financial uncertainty surrounding St. George. The proposed city will have a population of around 86,000 people and would become one of the largest municipalities in the state.

For the love of God, it is NOT a split! You can't split what isn't together. St. George is not and has never been part of the city of Baton Rouge. When SG becomes a city, it will not leave East Baton Rouge Parish. Absolutely no boundary lines are changing for the city of Baton Rouge.
It is unincorporated land south of Baton Rouge, hoping to become a city. THAT IS IT.

Wouldn't that be a good thing, since the current trajectory is a race to the bottom?

They need to stay in their lane. That lane is baseball and only baseball.

I don't think it can be adversely impacted in a worse manner than it already is........

SWB and The Advocate are going to have daily "Gatherings" and publications all bashing StG...which, coincidentally, will only remind StG to get out and vote.

Nope. Arguably the best college baseball coach of all-time, definitely the best coach in LSU history, regardless of sport can speak his mind on something that means a lot to him. How many years has he been an integral part of the BR community and you want to speak about him like that?

Figures with Skip. His entire game plan as AD was to raise fees on all season ticket holders.

Has anyone ever been persuaded how to vote by some celebrity's opinion? I honestly don't give a shite how they think I should vote on any given election.

How is Baton Rouge being its own incorporated city considered staying united? Should the city be submitting counters to incorporate the rest of the unincorporated areas of EBR to fit claim, after the fact of course, of staying together. What parts of the “together” are not going to still be together if city of SG happens.
I don’t even live in area any more, but it angers me that citizens of an incorporated area are trying to stop others from doing the same by pushing this together crap without even pushing a counter plan to be together and just acting like that’s what currently exists.

He is not talking about expanding BR or a part of BR splitting off. If he lives where he used to live he is just trying to stop city of BR from coming after him for more money when city can no longer take & spend within the city of BR that part of sales tax received from the unincorporated area wanting to form SG.

I believe Roger lives in Zachary and Skip lives in Riverbend.
