Sitting in the doctor office with my kid, doctor wants to prescribe

Antibiotics for strep without even running a test. Only visual inspection of ears and throat.
Isn't it frowned upon by civility standards because of the fear that viruses may gain immunity to antibiotics to just go around throwing antibiotics prescriptions?
I actually told the doctor this and she seemed to take offence and basically made me feel bad for questioning this.
Edit: I realize Strep is not a virus.

antibiotics work on bacterial infections. not viral.

Yes, this is actually the exact practice they frown upon. They’re supposed to run a strep sample and culture it to confirm presence of strep. I’d get a new doctor, especially if she gets mad when you question a legitimately bad practice

You can probably request the confirmatory test and it's not expensive and can be done in minutes.
And yes, part of the superbug issue is overuse of antibiotics. The bigger issue is that people stop taking them when they start to feel better instead of finishing the full course.
So if you ever get prescribed antibiotics, TAKE ALL OF THEM.

Strep is going around right now. Probably just figured frick it, I’ll just give the kid the antibiotics.

Viruses are immune to antibiotics! The fear is that bacteria present in the body can develop resistance the more they are exposed to antibiotics.

how many years of med school did you attend?
just google the meds and find out what they are for...if they are for what she has use them...but use them all

I mean, that' possible in the grand scheme, but Doc has probably seen 20 kids today with your's exact symptoms and knows what is "going around" at the moment.

This is nothing new. Most GP's nowadays take one look at a patient and throw medicine at them.
I was lucky to have one who actually cared for a couple of years. She got fed up with the practice and retired. Piedmont Physicians fricking blows

I'm not pretending to be a doctor so explain why the doctor was willing to prescribe them as a precautionary measure?
Posted on 9/3/19 at 3:57 pm to Bedhog
Strep can be diagnosed simply by history and exam. Typically will see a characteristic grey/white tonsillar exudate. Don’t need to get any lab work. Stick to watching Scrubs, baw, and leave the doctoring to the professionals.

That is not how this works

I think he's saying how does the doctor know its bacterial (strep) without doing the test and not viral.

It usually is pretty clear just by looking at the throat.

Good. I get it. I'm not a doctor yet here we sit in the doctors office with a doctor that was at first willing to prescribe them for a possible viral infection.
Would you question the doctor?
Posted on 9/3/19 at 4:00 pm to tigerfan4120
Normally they can visually identify it.
Posted on 9/3/19 at 4:01 pm to Bedhog
Strep typically involves a culture test
