Instead of carrying the 9, you sling it.

137 + 300=___

She couldn’t figure out how to show her work the Singapore way.

196 + 37=___

How does she show work the Singapore way? I tried to add 7 + 6, carry the one, but she said that was wrong and never heard of carrying.

She’s not dumb. She knows the answer but I can’t help her show how she got there.

Do you have it backwards? Is 196+37 the original problem??

If so, they want you to borrow from the 37 to make 196 into 200 then go from there

Solid marketing. They first tried to sell parents on Mexican Math but it just didn’t sell for some reasons.

Singapore Math sounds classy and successful with just the right amount of ancient Chinese wisdom.

This should never be done via Common Core. It's too easy to do in your head.

Is this that dumb shite where they want you to subtract or add to make big round numbers and then put the remainders somewhere? So you borrow 4 from the 37 so you get an easier 200 + 33. That doesn't explain the first easy one though. I'm glad we're in schools that don't do that crap anymore. EBR curriculum is garbage. Show your work...how about my way works.

Khan Academy for sure! They have lots of tutorials for grouping/regrouping and pretty much any concept the class is covering for each grade level.

Is that where you outnumber the Japanese 3-1 and still surrender?

I'm not down with a lot of the common core stuff, but this isn't dumb shite. That's how mental math works best.

That’s how I naturally do addition problems like that in my head. It’s way faster

I just re-read an article about him and how his punishment caused "international outrage," which means folks like Bill Clinton and other Western crybabies thought the punishment was too severe. Most rational people thought his arse should've been beaten.

Yes, so do I when doing it in my head. The dumbness is writing all the middle steps of it down, which one of my kids had to do at one point before we moved. I agree, that is how to get it done in real life in your head. But in school, if you get the answer, it should be good enough.

Not for some because it’s inherently racist. I’m not kidding. There was a story written about that. That story was allowed to get by the editors desk.

With that said, just go to YouTube and learn the math. It’s not hard.

Yuuuup.

It’s unnatural for how most of us were taught but if it clicks for you it’ll probably be both faster and more accurate for most of what you do in life. Folks around the office act like I know some kind of voodoo because I can rattle off basic math answers, but most of the time that’s all I’m doing

Yea but at some point if teaching 30 kids how to do it you need to see they get the concept. They don’t have to show their work on the basics forever but if you are teaching the process it’s important to see each kids learning the process

Just because it is easy for you to do in your head does mean it is easy for everyone to do in their head.

A lot of common core math is taking methods high IQ people used naturally and trying to train average and below average IQ people to do it in a way that just doesn't make sense for them. Then there is a portion of common core that just doesn't make any damn sense. I had to learn how to do math the teachers way and showing my work when 90% of the time I didn't need to write anything down to figure out the answer. It was harder for me to figure out the work than to just spit out the correct answer. That was equally as dumb, but nobody accused our education system of being smart... and that is the real problem.
