ST. GEORGE, La. (WAFB) - The City of St. George announced Wednesday, July 15, that they were awarded $19,247,698 in FY 2026 BUILD funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation for SAFE Siegen.
SAFE Siegen is a major corridor-improvement project focused on safety, access, and more predictable movement along Siegen Lane between I-10 and U.S. Highway 61/Airline Highway.
City officials said the project will improve approximately 1.35 miles of Siegen Lane by advancing street components, including landscaped raised medians, upgraded signal systems, continuous side paths and pedestrian crossings, upgraded transit stops, and enhanced lighting.
IMHO raised medians is just going to make the turn lanes unbearbaly long...

Yes yes this is good. We must provide safe corridors for the homeless to navigate from the tent city to the methadone clinic.

It'll never be ready in time.

I imagine the idea is to improve safety by removing suicide lanes and then make turning more predictable by reworking the lights. You can move people much faster if you just let a string of them turn through the intersection as opposed to having people wait for intermittent gaps in traffic.

Almost total waste of money.
Raised medians? Dumb and interferes with turning across.
Pedestrian amenities? For who? The drug addict beggers?

I’ve been avoiding Siegen for 20 years now. Nothing changes for me.

I thought things were great when the Siegen "lane" overpass replaced the wooden planks to help us go over the railroad tracks.
I don't want to have to count that far back.

Crosswalks and landscaping?
Really?
Whatever federal department funded this needs to be audited by DOGE.

But will they have any money to get some custom signs made?

I really hope they do. This looks like the light in front of Target. They need to stop the jackasses attempting to make left turns across 3 lanes of traffic while cars are sitting at the light. There's always an Altima blocking traffic trying to get to Siegen Village shopping center, Advanced Auto and the Dollar Store.
St. George is attempting to "idiot proof" the road.
They need to build these medians at least 16" high in order to prevent people from driving over them.

Siegen was perfect back in the day when it was a gravel road. Between the Falcons' house and the Kleinpeter store, there was just woods, except for St. George and Audubon Terrace.

Baton Rouge can’t even cut the grass. St. George is proving they can run a city more efficiently.

Oh great. Now we can have shitty, unkept medians that’ll be filled with panhandlers, garbage, and dead plants.

Siegen went this design to the suicide lanes to improve traffic. Now they were sold on the idea to go back.
Progress.
Progress.

Pedestrian Amenities? That will be taken over by homesless the second it opens.

How much did the environmental study cost?

It's amazing how pessimistic people can be about a new city's attempt to beautify a major corridor. Props to STG for taking action after EBR did nothing. The homeless population in this area has gone down dramatically since STG incorporated.
