In Cockpit Confidential, he has a whole section on Sully. This is an excerpt of what he wrote (the long and short of it is that a) he got lucky to have a big body of water to land onto and b) they are all trained for this kind of thing; the word "hero" is thrown around too often):

shite is ridiculous. I cant get a loan of about $80,000 for just a instrument, private and multi ratings with just 250 hours. its a dream, but that's about all it is at this point.

now's the time, perfect storm for becoming a professional aviator, the majors have begun ab initio flight training programs with scholarships, grants, and/or low interest loans, with the objective of funneling new pilots into their regional airlines to start a pool of applicants for the main line

34. It would take too long to get the hours to get the license, and that's before I even consider the cost. If I didn't have a family, hell yea. But at this point it's only happening if I hit the powerball

Hell, I fly with a guy in my reserve squadron who works for one of the AA wholly owned regionals. They no shite gave him money to rent an airplane and build time so he'd be eligible for a restricted ATP. Blew my mind when he told me that. It was a few thousand bucks.
ETA: And he's got a spot at American when his number gets pulled in however many years(As long as the flow holds up). He's in his mid 20's and is pretty much set.

yeah, gotcha, not necessarily too old if you busted a move, but taking the pay hit while getting qualified and supporting a family would be a tall order
