Yes, it's a vicious cycle.

They have said, repeatedly, that they endeavor to fund projects in house instead of funding them through bonds and wasting money on interest, which requires them to save up the money. Would you prefer they burn the money frivolously?

Baton Rouge is frequently ranked among the least safe cities in the U.S., often appearing in the top 5 most dangerous cities in
recent WalletHub studies, which use a formula analyzing crime rates, natural disaster risk, and financial safety. It was ranked 180th out of 182 cities in 2025, having the lowest score in the nation for home and community safety.

If Baton Rouge could become even 25 percent safer, the increase in property tax collections, sales tax collections, school improvements, etc., would be immense.

People don't realize the toll crime has on the overall performance of virtually every metric of a city.

Easy to skew those numbers. Just redraw the city limit lines and change the northern 25% of the city to Baker.

Of course. But I am talking about actual improvements.

You can always juke the stats.

Sergeant pay going from $69k to $98k -42% increase
Lieutenant pay going from $75k to $108k - 44% increase
Captain pay going from $81k to $121k - 49% increase

So, the higher you are up the rank, the higher your raise will be. I guess the beat cops are the ones getting the 15% bump.

Libraries in EBR Parish have accrued more than $114 million in budget surplus, resulting from years of overtaxation of citizens

First off, I agree the libraries are overfunded.

But his plan is to steal from the library fund that the entire parish pays into in order to pay for a service that only the city of Baton Rouge receives.

I agree

Parish services paid for by parish dollars should not be paying city services.

BR would be robbing half the parish.

Let’s see if the taxpayers north of Florida Blvd. can pay this. But first the need to pay St. George the $60,000,000 they owe.

Where do your quotes about moving money from the library surplus to fund the police raises come from? Those quotes are not in the link you posted.

The Advocates front page story on the police raises does not mention moving funds from the libraries.

quote:

Baton Rouge police will soon be getting the largest pay raise in department history, Mayor-President Sid Edwards announced Thursday, after years of complaints that low compensation has caused a systemic shortage of officers.

Most of the money will come from savings in the city-parish health care plan for retirees, which the Metro Council overhauled last year.

Council members Jen Racca, Cleve Dunn Jr. and Dwight Hudson pushed for the benefits overhaul last September.

The raises will need Metro Council approval next month before they go into effect.
LINK

WBRZ.com also doesn't mention moving library funds.

quote:

The pay increase will be funded by savings from health insurance reforms, as well as salary and benefit savings from BRPD, Edwards said. It will take effect in the middle of May and be reflected on officers' paychecks in early June.
LINK

So, again, where did you get the quotes you posted about moving library funds to pay for the raises?

You need seniority and leadership and that has to start somewhere

It gives the new hires something to look forward to.

This is what prioritizing public safety looks like.

Government exists to protect its citizens, and confronting rising criminal behavior requires more officers and stronger support. Unless you live under a rock, you know there is a need for far more police officers in the killing fields of Baton Rouge.

Paying police a fair living wage honors those who stayed the course and ensures we can recruit the next generation willing to serve.

I don't disagree with the fact that you need quality people in those roles, I just found it funny that the higher up you went, the larger the raise was.

Also, when you have a 22% deficit on officers, it's great to have aspirations as you work up the chain; but chances are you need to also focus on increasing the lower level pay to entice them to want to be hired on to begin with.

I love the fact they were able to find funding with no taxes

It’s literally a win for everyone.
