No doubt. People do some fricked up shite to make sure they “get their cut.”

I fully expect my adoptive dad to leave me out entirely and give it all to my half-sisters. So no worries about this happening to me. Focused on making my own retirement.

Happened to a good friend of mine. his mother was very wealthy.
Mom moved to a city where his sister lived.
Sister's hubby is a big pharma exec. 1 other sister and 1 brother.
The 2 sisters took everything they wanted from the mother and most of her liquid assets.
After death sister avoided him even though he thought they were close.
Anyway he went to sisters house, the kids let him in and he sees a lot of his mothers nice things , Paintings etc there.
Sister confesses that she and other sister decided that she deserved it because Mon was in the same city and she had been somewhat taking care of her (Mom had her own House) and he had plenty of money. The other sister was still on Mom's tit even in her late 40's.

Overall they took at least 1.5 million that did not belong to them. Friend still got a ton he could have sued but dropped it. Still pissed that someone he loved and trusted did that.

If I had a sibling that was struggling, I'd let them know that they were getting whatever my mother leaves when she dies. Everything I have, I've gotten on my own, with no help from anyone, and don't want or need anything for free. I'm an only child, though.

Edit: My mother remarried and her husband has 3 kids. It could get interesting if their wills aren't clear cut. I would hand everything over to a sibling that needed it, but I don't know these people and it will get ugly if they try something shady to get their hands on my mother's assets.

Family member did it to my mother. Humans have a knack for dishonesty/theft and spinning it so much that they come to believe their own lies. Caused a lot of grief and split to my family.

I also wouldn't put it past my brother to try it to me.

My uncles step son is like this. My uncle has made good money. He has funded his step sons projects for years. All of them failed. He cut him off. This POS heard about a dying aunt, and moved on her. Got all her shite. He had a heart attack shortly after, so karma won.

I am going to have a 3rd party executor that no one knows about. All my assets will be monitored and if one of my children tries to get more than their share, they will unknowingly forfeit it to the others.

My FIL father got screwed by 3rd Party executioner. The lawyer guy kept everything under his control and wouldn't even let him have his own assets when he got medically sick

You have so much dementia in your family that you won’t have to worry about getting any inheritance.

Had a family member pull some shady shite when my dad died. They stole his drivers license and had some documents co-signed. Nothing major against the estate, but they did it within weeks of him dying and did it after an ambulance ride to the ER.

Unfortunately, this kind of thing is shockingly common...once a parent passes, the true shittiness comes out in people. They will ruin the relationship of a tight knit family for some old junk that is not worth hauling away.

I have decided that if there is even an inkling that this will happen among those left when I pass, I will donate every bit of my estate to charity and none of them will get a penny...I just don't see the point of leaving people money if it is going to ruin relationships for rhe rest of their lives. I have told the to them all, too.

Brother-in-law “invested” my in-laws life savings in real estate under his name and put them on a monthly budget. In-laws pass away, as does the brother-in-law. Now his kids own the properties and the rest of the family is shite out of luck.

I would guess a properly drawn up will, legally witnessed, notorized and filed at the courthouse will prevent a lot of these “hid the will” and “changed the will” issues.

When my dad's uncle died, his cousin got the majority of the inheritance (my dad's uncle didn't have kids). It made my dad say "wtf?", but it wasn't enough to cause a rift in the family0 and it was a good chunk of money. You can't let that stuff get to you. Life is too short. Unless you're on the verge of homelessness, it's not worth losing sleep over.
