Murrell's has been brought up several times, but I'd like to mention the old billboard that was on top of the building, which was there forever, advertising the Mid-City Motor Hotel (on Jordan). It actually wasn't exactly a billboard, as it was a permanent signage. I looked closely at it one time, and it seemed to be comprised of a kind of porcelain-ish blocks. It featured an artistic rendition of the front of the hotel, and parked at its entrance was a stylized old auto, looking something like an old mid-1950s Buick or the like. You really couldn't see the car unless you got up close and looked at the sign. Had never noticed it the millions of times I'd driven by it on Youree.
Anyway, the sign obviously dated back to the 1950s, and it intrigued me that it was still standing there and serving its purpose, all those years later. I took a photo of it in the mid-1990s. I also stayed once at the Mid-City Hotel around that time, but it wasn't in the best of shape, as I recall. It seemed big and rather creepily empty. I think the restaurant had long since closed. There used to be a childrens' shoe store housed on the other side of the hotel building, correct?

I don’t understand why Shreveport or Bossier doesn’t build a minor league ballpark along the river. You’ve got easy transportation routes with the two parkways and the river breezes would be nice on summer nights. Surely there’s got to be a vacant tract of land out there.

It would be great but Shreveport doesn’t support nothing. I heard someone say they wonder why Shreveport can’t get things like Top Golf, it’s because Shreveport sucks nowadays. Pro Wrestling legend Chris Jericho said it best at a show at Hirsch Coliseum. He said it was great to be in Shitport. Nobody boo’d him.

quote:He was a coach when I was there. He was no-nonsense. In football practice I turned my back on an overzealous friend of mine playing defense and he blindsided me. I got up ready to fight and Coach Burton grabbed me by the collar and said, "Are you stupid? That boy will eat your lunch!" He was right, of course, but I said, "Coach, the only reason he blindsided me is because I caught him eating boogers in the shower." (which was a lie but we both had good smack game then). Coach Burton was laughing now, and looked over at my friend and said, "is that true? You like a tasty booger now and then?" Now the whole team was laughing and he yelled at everyone to shut up and told both of us to go run the field back and forth until he says to stop. I think we had to do seven laps each.
I remember their coach, Jerry Burton even came and checked on me .
Thanks for reminding me of him.

quote:For good reason, they were all whacked gay guys with a penchant for the occult. Drew Hunter (Dr. Blood) was queer as a three-dollar bill. My mom was involved in the Miss Louisiana pageant and there was a modeling studio in Shreveport called Mister Lynn's. The owner, Mister Lynn, was often the host emcee for the pageant. Drew Hunter was a makeup artist doing makeup on some of the contestants.
A few people mentioned Dr. Blood's at the State Fair. Those guys always followed me around and scared me to death.
I went with my mom to a backstage event and they were there. My mom pointed them out and said to stay away from them and kindly explained why.

Shreveport has nostalgia? What a pathetic thread. And BR is not that much better.

I know which one to which you're referring.
Old Texas St South of the interstate was a perfect place for gentrification. All those old buildings, densely packed. Its a major lost opportunity for that city.

Your list brings back a lot of great memories.
Edit:
I think you need to add the El Chico's on Greenwood Road to your list. That was Shreveport's very first Tex-Mex restaurant and that location opened in the 1940s. It was an institution for many years. I always thought the food was great and would go there after the Independence Bowl.
And also 1-800-551-8900.
