My great great great grandfather fought because Louisiana chose to secede and he fought against an oppressive government who was in violation of the Constitution.

My great, great, great uncle was Colonel James Doolittle and it’s rumored that all Doolittles are direct descendants of William the Conquerer but are a bastard clan of his. Other than that, no fricks given about my ancestors. We are all descended from rapists and murderers, so I will not be held accountable for their sins nor their successes.

I don’t mind a German honoring their ancestor fighting in WWII if they were a mere soldier or pawn of the Third Reich. If their ancestor was a member of the SS or Gestapo, then I say frick those people trying to honor their ancestor. I know for a fact I’m descended from slave owners during the Civil War, and I won’t honor them. If my ancestor simply fought for the Confederacy though, I see the argument. They were mere pawns.

Do you honor said ancestors though? .5% of the world population are direct descendants of Genghis Khan. 10,000 years ago for every male ancestor we had we had 17 female ancestors. Only mass atrocities against both men and women can explain those statistics.
