My ancestors were poor white farmers who never owned slaves. I know one fought at Gettysburg and another at Corinth. They came from Scotland and were run out of both North and South Carolina for refusing to stop wearing kilts.

I know one group did until the Civil War. The others just weren't rich enough.

My grandparents on both sides were rural trash. They may have even been indentured server types or share croppers for all I know.
They worked hard and tried to make things better for their kids so I appreciate them.

There is a strong Jewish community in the South. Southerners accepted Jews in a way that Northerners did not.

Paul Greenberg wrote this wonderful piece about R.E. Lee a few years ago now.

In this part he’s speaking about the southerners who come to him, to thank him for remembering Lee In his writing.

quote:

The quality they have in common may be deference -- not only to others, and certainly not to the general himself, for deference would not in any way approach their feeling on that subject, but a deference to the human experience, with all its defeats and losses. Maybe that is why so many of them are middle-aged or older, as if they had encountered some defeats and losses of their own -- losses and defeats that can never be erased, that will always be a part of them, but that they carry almost with grace. The pain will always be there, but now it is covered by forbearance. They have learned that there are certain hurts that, in order to be overcome, must be gone through. Continually. Till it is part of their ongoing character.

No they did not.

Read period letters.

They fought for political independence from the North. That’s what motivated them. And it was true of officers and common soldiers alike.

If my ancestor simply fought for the Confederacy though, I see the argument. They were mere pawns.

And what was going on that they needed political independence from? Hold on, let me grab the Alabama secession speech real quick

quote:

I feel impelled, Mr. President, to vote for this Ordinance by an overruling necessity. Years ago I was convinced that the Southern States would be compelled either to separate from the North, by dissolving the Federal Government, or they would be compelled to abolish the institution of African Slavery. This, in my judgment, was the only alternative; and I foresaw that the South would be compelled, at some day, to make her selection. The day is now come, and Alabama must make her selection, either to secede from the Union, and assume the position of a sovereign, independent State, or she must submit to a system of policy on the part of the Federal Government that, in a short time, will compel her to abolish African Slavery.

What did they do? Join the group who laid this out in their cornerstone speech, regardless of free people of color in mass

quote:

Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. This truth has been slow in the process of its development, like all other truths in the various departments of science.

If you're going by body count it would be less offensive than Communism and their symbolism. Nazis had the best uniforms ever too
