Yes, capitalism should exist.

What is price gouging?

I would gladly pay $5 a gallon for gasoline without having to wait in these lines we have now.

Who was the poster that owned a gas station that defended his price gouging several years back?

Everyone who needs gas at $3 a gallon will still need to buy it at $5. The lines will not disappear with higher prices.

Let me change my answer. Anyone looking to make a quick buck off the misfortune of others during times like these is a scumbag piece of shite, full stop.

Whole lot of contractors out there you just called out. However, if they didn’t have incentive to come here to help (ability to make more here than where they are) then it would take us five times as long to clean up and get back to normal.

Your post demonstrates how emotional people can get about this topic. It's one of my favorite yearly topics on the OT Lounge because sooo many people show their arse.

I gave you your seventh upvote and there were nine downvotes. Should be 10:1 upvotes but people get dumb when it comes to "price gouging"

The best example I can give is how plentiful premium gas was on Friday.
People were spending 15 minutes pumping 7 gallons of regular. I bought premium for 80 cents more and I was gone in two minutes.

As someone with family from Lake Charles whose places are still far from repaired despite payment I can assure you at least 90% of contractors are in fact scumbag pieces of shite.

There was a store in old metry open today. was posted to their insta. Who was on the image though? Couple of karens buying a a cart full of water.

Now, was that cart for everyone in the neighborhood? Maybe. Was it for folks at a nursing? Also maybe. Was it just for them? Also maybe. Are any of those scenarios better than any of the others? A-ha!

And thats the rub, isnt it? It all depends on what you think "fair" is. Then again, thats why you prepare. So you can wait this shite out.

That's exactly what is naturally happening with supply/demand. Now you sound like Soviet Russia. Congrats.

If I buy 10 generators in Memphis and bring them to BR and sell them at twice the retail value, is that price gouging?

What kind of generators?

If you went to a harbor freight in Memphis and paid $400 per for generators you turned around and sold for $800, I don't think that'd unreasonable. That took your time, a significant amount of gas money, and presumably you had to tow a trailer.

Now if you made the same trip for 10 Honda inverters at $3k per and came back and tried to sell them for $6k apiece, that's kind of a dick move.

A better solution would be to limit quantities purchased. It would be almost impossible to enforce though without having additional attendees working the pumps.

Ideally, you would allow someone evacuating to fill their vehicle up, but not allow someone to fill up 15 5 gallon gas cans.

Jacking up the price to meet supply and demand is allowed, provided you're within whatever the range is for competitive pricing. Jacking up the price because the next door gas station is out of fuel is and should be illegal.

If I had a station today I would have a $3 line and a $5 line

Yes. I, too, have taken an entry level macro-econ class.

I also have a superpower known as open-minded thinking.

If you have 200 gallons of gas left at your station until the next fuel delivery and 20 people are in line, what's the best way to ensure that everyone gets enough to make it to the next day?

A. Jack up the price to $6/gallon.

Or

B. Limit quantity pumped to 10 gallons per car.

people are dumb and say they are for freedom and capitalism until they arent. Most is because of ignorance of economics.

just like this thread....emotional kids throwing tantrums becuase how dare you let natural market forces dictate things.

Why is that the goal of the station? How does the station know what the people are going to do with it?

Absolutely. "Gouging" should be allowed.

It creates a huge incentive for more supply to be brought in quickly.

It limits surplus buying.

It allows for pricing differences. Many would gladly and willingly pay extra for gas to not have to wait in a 2 hour line while everyone fills up 10 gas cans in a panic.

Said another way, if I have 10 generators in Memphis why should I bother to bring them to BR unless there is significantly more money to be made. The potential for greater profit in disaster areas helps assure supplies and materials will be brought to that area.

As a 1%er I support price gouging. Let me get what I need even if I pay more.
