re: Should people 65+ work

Most can't retire financially, social security isn't enough and they haven't saved adaquately.


When I audited 401k plans it was amazing how many 50-60 year olds had less than 50k in their account.

OK, So there will be ZERO SS when I retire in 8 years????

Do you realize how many people that are over 65 that are NOT wealthy but have saved A few bucks to retire on... They may not have A million, but they rely on what they saved and the SS they have put into for years... Are those people worthless and should be put down??????

Your job in this economy is to make money for yourself and those who are wealthy. If you can't do either then we have no need for you regardless of age.

Those people you want to kiss your arse are the people who allow you to make money. Who do you think signs your checks?

They are the reason this economy exists. People like you, who want handouts, are the reason we're not better.

Each situation is different. Some have to and some choose to. My uncle is in his late 60s and chooses to work 60+ hours a week because he doesn't know any different. The running joke was that he had to work to pay for his four daughters weddings, but he'd rather be at his office than at home.

I'll just throw this out there from my own personal experience, and the impact it's had on my own views toward one day retiring and considering what to do with my life.

My grandpa is 87 years old and still goes to my family's mechanic shop every day to work, or "piddle around", as he calls it. For his age, he has zero health problems, takes no medication, and is still able to do all of the work that goes into changing tires, oil, etc. The best part of this is the the fact that when he gets off afternoon, he goes to our camp house on the river and drinks a few beers before coming home for the night. Now, he did retire at 65 from his career at a denim plant where he worked his entire life, but he continued to keep busy with our shop since.

He claims that keeping busy and staying active, especially physically active, does wonders for retirement. I completely agree with him too. I'm about to be 30, and until recently, I was pretty set on working until whichever age retirement will be in 30+ years, retiring, and settling into that old folks routine that I had grown up seeing all around me. Now, I have already started devising ways to continue working in some capacity, hopefully doing something just because I enjoy it, until I die.
