One of the reps there told police the suspect came up and asked him if they were republicans or democrats.
This is a pretty big charity game between party members.

Mo Brooks told CNN that it is "well known in the neighborhood when and where the GOP baseball practice takes place". If I knew how I would like the tweet, but it was from the New Day twitter and CNN retweeted it.
Between the riots and now this, it is pathetic that people are resorting to violence over politics. If you don't like his politics write him a letter, or vote him out if you live in his district. Violence literally solves nothing and only makes it worse.

Correct. Given the location of the field, both parties have likely practiced or practice here at some time. If you go to the YMCA, or live in the area, you likely know that a group of middle aged men playing softball early in the morning is not the weekday rec league, but the reps practicing.

Flipping channels. MSNBC had a guy say that Scalise was dragging himself toward the outfield, trying to put some distance between himself and the guy who shot him.

Why? They don't have protection on a day to day basis when they aren't on the Hill.
As Whip, Scalise has a security detail. But, in reality, that probably consists of one or two Capitol Police officers in plain clothes. Which would explain the quick response and shoot out which probably kept the gun man from killing everybody there.

That's how I heard it as well.

The CH officer that took him down had initially been shot in the leg and then started returning fire. Dudes an absolute hero.

Ok, thanks. Missed some of the broadcast.

People taking a partisan stance on this issue are miserable human beings. I can't stand most Democrats from a political standpoint but I'd never want any of them to be shot, only voted out.

I'm not sure if things are different while in DC, but when McCarthy was whip, he traveled with more than 2 Secret Service members.

You are 100% correct. The Capitol Hill Police that are assigned to protection details are the best at what they do. They usually don't carry long guns in their detail vehicles either, so they subdued this guy with their service weapons.
