The guys who were shot were getting off a bus from a "field trip" to D.C. to see a play.
Must have been an afternoon performance, because DC to Charlottesville is a 3 hour drive. Play plus dinner would get them to UVA about 10:30.
Were there only football players on the bus?
Where did UVA play on Saturday?

Pittsburg won at Charlottesville Saturday and the "crowd" in the stadium was 59% filled.
Did they fly somewhere to see a play? Something's missing.

Probably drove up to see a play for class credit on Sunday and drove back. That seems pretty straight forward.
