Shocker! Southern University marijuana grow op in shambles...

Southern University contracted with a group that their own advisory board warned them not to do business with yet they chose them anyway. Why? Because they promised them a bunch of cash. They haven’t even purchased land to start a building. Meanwhile, LSU’s partner has plants growing and a permanent facility most of the way complete. What a shocker.
The state laid a Golden Goose in their lap and they are fricking it up by the numbers. Unbelievable.

More than a year after Southern University selected Advanced Biomedics to run its medical marijuana program, the company has not acquired the land it targeted for growing operations or reached a point of paying Southern any of the $6 million that attracted the university to the company. The Lafayette company appears to have made little progress, if any, toward beginning operations as one of two Louisiana growers.

Southern and LSU are the only two licensed growers of marijuana in Louisiana, as dictated by state law. Both institutions picked private companies to run their operations. LSU’s partner, GB Sciences, has plants growing in a temporary facility while it works to get regulatory approval for its permanent operations in a former Pepsi distribution center in south Baton Rouge.

Southern has declined repeated interview requests over the past five months, and did not answer a detailed list of questions about the partnership with Advanced Biomedics. Representatives of Advanced Biomedics have not responded to requests for comment.

Southern was lured by Advanced Biomedics in part because of the firm's promise of more than $6 million in payments — exceeding any other applicant. Seven companies applied to be Southern's marijuana growing partner. Advanced Biomedics beat out two other finalists for the marijuana contract last fall, despite a review committee recommending the board pick a different vendor. Earlier this spring, at a Southern board meeting where members were deciding whether to sign a deal with Advanced Biomedics, Southern University President and Chancellor Ray Belton touted the “positive cash flow” that would come from the deal.

I hate how the state essentially owns the rights to medical marijuana. It tells you how all of this is about making money. Legalize and regulate.

Hey, at least they're consistent

Advanced Biomedics
Looks like Southern did their homework
Eta: After reading more about it, it seems that the company had internal problems (and a lawsuit), Southern was aware of it, yet they chose AB anyway. The majority owner was even thinking about suing Southern

That entire university needs to be either completely shut down or gutted. It blows me away how a group can be this incompetent and allowed to continue.

Im guessing this contract involved lining the pockets of Southern’s board members

Typical NBR. You see, you give 2 people some money. One, invest it and watches his money grow. The 2nd one buries it in the ground and it gets stolen.

I didn't need a news story to tell me NBR has shitty weed

But. But. HBCU!
The only thing keeping them around is the fact that they're a black college. They know they can keep stealing money from the state because they can claim racism if anyone holds them to any sort of standard. Just look at the SUNO fiasco. That should've been an easy call but that festering sore is still hanging around

Why is money so fricking racist??

How else was it going to occur?

You don't need a functional business when all you're looking for is something under the table. Evidence often dies with the company.

It's Louisiana - no shock there. In fact I think Fred Mills, the main lawmaker responsible for getting it passed, is a banker and a pharmacist. No doubt he's set himself up for the future with this.
