I actually had shingles in my 20's (which is rare), we were on a fishing trip and I woke up with what looked like poison ivy wrapped around my mid section.
And in God Awful pain, of course as a young dumb arse I went ahead and finished the trip.
Got diagnosed later and the Dr said they follow the nerves on your rib cage, he also said they could come back so I got the Vax at Walmart.
My elderly uncle had them in his eye and it was hell on him

i would say this.
I have not had the shot. But, i HAVE had shingles and it's one of the most miserable pains I can remember. It's like your nerve is on fire. Then the blisters and rash appear. It's impossible to be comfortable, impossible to sleep. Even with pain meds sleeping is tough.
Mine lasted for several months. Pain meds ran out and it's really hard to get refills.

Had Chicken Pox as a child.
Somehow got it again as an adult.
I remember both times, and neither one was mild.
I've also heard horror stories about Shingles..
I'll be getting the first shot on the day I turn 50. I'd take it sooner but they won't let me get it yet.

I will take NO vaccines. All big pharma cares about is your money.
One can't prove that the shingles vax lessens the condition.

I had a mild case of shingles that was still pretty painful and I got the vax later because I didn't want a repeat of that.

I'd get it.
Shingles fricking BLOWS and the shots work.

Don't get medical advice here.

I'm about to refuse a tetanus shot and I'm pretty sure my doctor is going to be angry.
Posted on 2/20/25 at 9:24 am to Reubaltaich
I did it. No way do I want to risk shingles.

I have become increasingly anti-vaxx since Covid but I got this one.

I've had the vax and haven't had shingles.

Yes. My grandmother suffered with that and it was awful. Of course this was a long time ago when there was no vax. My mother got the vaccination when it became available. She was already 60, but she got shingles and the vaccination helped with the severity. I got the vax and followup dose. I have not had it and definitely don't ever want it. Follow your docs suggestion.

I am 36 and have shingles right now.
This is the most painful thing I have ever experienced. It is along my lower torso and back on my left side. I have only slept an hour or two each night for the last week. It feels like my torso is lit of fire constantly, and then occasionally I will get additional shooting pains like I am being stabbed all the way through with a needle. Those take my breath away.
I have the antiviral meds but the Dr did not give me any painkillers. Get the vaccine. This is brutal.

They gave me Gabapenton. that hardly worked. Gave me Oxy, that at least dulled the pain somewhat.

I got my first shot this year. It sucked. Plus nurse failed warned me there were side effects so I hadn't planned my week to have 102 fever, being knocked out for a few days and getting a huge swollen arm.
I also was unaware that it was a two dose shot until I looked it up at home later. I do not want to get the second shot.
You are also supposed to repeat the shot series every 7 years. GAH.
