anyone have skin pain before the rash appeared?
Well shingles is a strain of the herpes virus and it lies dormant for a long time and can be triggered by many things. Stress, excessive sunlight, certain foods, alcohol, you name it. It travels on nerve pathways and with most Herpes Simplex Virus outbreaks there is a "prodrom" phase where the rash is not yet visible but the pain has started. This is a precursor to an outbreak and a course of Valtrex would be wise and do it ASAP because time is of the essence.

I hope you're over 50 or you're not getting the vaccine.

quote:Get off the internet and get to a doctor now man. My older neighbor (65 yr old) had that shite in June. The summer heat did him no favors, he appeared to have paralysis, an angry rash and could not put on a belt or even a fitted shirt for 2 months. His wife said he didn't rest well and barely slept for like 3 weeks.
I have pain around my waist and down the outside of my thigh. Feels itchy/burning like a sunburn but nothing visible. The internet seems to point to possible shingles.

My right eyebrow started to swell and was a little sore. I thought it was maybe a massive zit so I tried to pop it, this obviously didnt work and hurt like hell. The next morning it was kind of scaly and had swollen more so I went to the urgent care and got diagnosed with Shingles at the tender age of 21. Probably lasted all of two weeks after I got on some meds.

I have a call into the doctor. Waiting on an appointment.

Yes, it was awful. It started under my armpit so I initially thought it was a rash caused by recently switching deodorants. Since I thought it would just go away I waited way too long to do anything about it and it spread around my chest and back.
It was extremely painful to the point that just the air coming from vents hurt. Showers had to be short and lukewarm b/c any kind of heat felt like I was on fire but a cold shower stung like I'd jumped into an icy river. Even my softest shirts felt itchy.
I had to take pain pills and meds for at least a month to clear it up and even though I was on a bunch of vicodin it was still painful. If you think you have it go get checked out now before it gets bad. If you don't have it but are old enough to get the vaccine go get it now. You don't want to let it get out of control.

My wife had skin pain on her stomach to the point we almost had surgery. Her doctor did a test and she was positive for shingles. There were no visible signs. A couple rounds of medicine later and the pain went away.

As said, the pain showed first. Shoulder blade area and a catch in my breath. That was on a Monday. Looked like pimples on Friday and it hurt to take a deep breath. Went Saturday AM and got a shot. Stress caused it. I was late 20's. Hurt for about 3-4 weeks after but not pain medicine hurt.

Shingles- Tell me your stories of this illness
Just saw my primary last week and because I'd turned 50 this year she offered the shingles vaccine. I jumped at getting it. Told me that 1 in 4 people who have had chicken pox will get shingles and that the vaccine effectiveness rate is in the mid 90%s...so I gladly took it.
Shoulder hurt for two solid days, but well worth it. Shingles seems awful.

Call your doc get an anti viral ASAP and start taking it if they can’t see you go to a walk in clinic tell them you have shingles and you want valtrex 1 gram every 8 hours for 7 days

Ha - yep, my initial symptoms were excruciating upper abdomen pain - I had a cat-scan on afterwards was on a table being examined when the MD noticed a single small bump on my skin in the general area of pain - he diagnosed shingles on the spot - worst 10 weeks of my life - covered from waist to neck on entire right side. Brutal. Good luck

Had I forming around my ribcage on my side in my early 30s. Dr. Diagnosed it, got some Valtrex and it was gone in a couple weeks. Never felt a thing.

I had a really bad case of shingles that began right after Coral Sea. The old man made me stay at Pearl while the rest of the fleet steamed for Midway.

Had it in my 20s.
Was traveling around for a conference the same week. I didn’t see anything immediately where the pain was.
It was horribly painful and uncomfortable. I finally got to go to the doc after flying home, they said it was really rare to see someone so young with it.
I had chicken pox as a kid too so I don’t know what the deal was.
I still have a numb area in the middle of my back from it.

When children get chickenpox, it causes the adults around them to reactivate the antibodies and prevents shingles outbreaks.
Worked the opposite way for me. I had shingles when I was 7. Never got chicken pox.

People of color used to come up my road and eat spoonfuls of clay dirt to help with shingles.

It is a horrible reminder of having chicken pox as a youngin.
I remember when Tony Larussa had it, he said it was the worst pain he's ever dealt with.
Had an Aunt, who said it brought her to tears, it hurt so much.

discomfort more than pain.
hypersensitive skin to touch. lukewarm showers seemed like it was full hot.

Had it last year on half of my forehead. At first it felt as if I had an ant crawling on my skin. The next morning half of my forehead felt as if I had been exposed to fire coral. Went to the emergency clinic because I thought it was odd that only half my forehead hurting and she told me I was I. The beginning stages of shingles. Got put on valtrex and it was I we in about two weeks but I had to go to my ophthalmologist 3 times within that span to make sure my eye was unaffected.
Had light sensitivity for about 5 days. .
