Damn how embarrassing, all over a drunken steakhouse fight.

That felony is going to be hard for Smith to overcome.

You are assuming he doesnt plead down to a misdemeanor.

He turned himself in to Tangi jail. He is the sheriff of St. Tammany. It would be more work for deputies to protect him in STP jail, and he would face accusations of preferential treatment.

I know the AG's office is supposedly handling the investigation to avoid any conflict of interest with STPSO investigating their own boss.

But do you think that the prosecution would try to get the court proceedings moved to Tangi or another parish too since the sheriff probably knows most of the St Tammany judges personally?

Tangipahoa Parish was used for the booking was a deliberate move to avoid the optics and logistical nightmare of having a sitting Sheriff booked into his own jail by his own deputies. Using a neighboring jurisdiction like Tangipahoa keeps the processing impartial and secure.

No way in hell that felony charge is sticking around, especially for someone I’d guess is a first time offender. Not him, and not in SE Louisiana. Not happening.

Since only about 3% of cases go to a trial, a plea bargain is a safer bet.

I, as a resident of St. Tammany Parish, do not want my Sheriff to have a criminal record when his job is to keep our community safe from criminals. IDGAF what he pleas down to. He assaulted an innocent man sitting in a restaurant in public at 4:30 PM on a Friday afternoon. Smith's statement saying he will continue to serve the people of St. Tammany Parish is complete bullshite. If the AG's office determined no charges were warranted, he would not be sitting in Tangipahoa Parish jail awaiting a bond hearing at this point in time.
