The title says it all. Good news for our state. Now to get more new plants and refineries!

Shell plans to hang on to Norco

What's going on with the Convent refinery? Are there still workers there? Are any of the units running? Is it a ghost town, or what?

Ghost town. Nothing is running. So weird to drive by it and see nothing going on at such a large refinery

Wow, so the only US based Shell oil refinery will be Norco.

Not really sure. I just live 10 minutes down the road from the place so I pass it a lot. I just know that there’s no one in there from what I can see, and there’s no smoke or anything coming from any piece of equipment

Had no idea Norco was only 227Mbpd. Is that right?

Norco was never really a question. When the divestment of Deer Park was announced, leaving only Norco, it certainly lead to some uncertainty around the site. However, Shell has never marketed or considering unloading Norco. It was considered an “Energy Hub” and has some critical ties to Geismar. The telltale sign is always investments into the site. Geismar continues to see new projects.

As for Convent, there’s still a couple dozen people at the site in various roles. All the units are cold with only some tankage remaining in service.

I thought Convent still had the ability to feed utilities to a new Praxair module. I guess they may not have completed the project.

Yeah that’s pretty laughable. If you ever see any smoke coming from a refinery, that’s a bad thing.

There are still some workers there. The company we supply products for said they expect to be there for the next year or two at least cleaning up.
