San Francisco is the nation’s leader in property crime. Burglary, larceny, shoplifting, and vandalism are included under this ugly umbrella. The rate of car break-ins is particularly striking: in 2017 over 30,000 reports were filed, and the current average is 51 per day. Other low-level offenses, including drug dealing, street harassment, encampments, indecent exposure, public intoxication, simple assault, and disorderly conduct are also rampant.
Many in law enforcement blame the crime wave on Proposition 47, which in 2014 downgraded possession of illegal narcotics for personal use and theft of anything under $950 in value from felonies to misdemeanors.

Pay highest rent in country to live in a city with a higher rate of burglary than New Orleans

Somebody give me one good reason why stealing 949 dollars worth of property should be poo-pooed as a misdemeanor

When did society become so frightened of standing up to trash? Instead of saying "act right and quit stealing," we start to decriminalize theft.

Inflation from the time the laws were originally drafted... plus the ridiculous cost of goods in san fran. There are 2 valid reasons. The 3rd could be cost of phones exceeding that amount now.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Liberals ruin everything.

This serves them right for sure. You reap what you sow.

If someone makes $15-$20 an hour, $949 would be stealing an entire paycheck from them. But progs don't care about riff-raff.

“Property and low-level crimes shrink the space for everyday people and enlarge them for the people committing them,” says Nancy Tung, a criminal prosecutor for two decades, who is running for district attorney in the 2019 election. “If we continue down this path, we will see more people leave San Francisco.” Tung will face a competitive field of opponents, including Deputy Public Defender Chesa Boudin, a socialist and the son of two convicted Weather Underground murderers, who wants to reduce criminal sentences. Keeping people out of jail is the new social-justice battle

San Francisco is lost forever if Cheesy Boudin is elected District Attorney.

Florida is considering changing Grand Theft from $350 (not joking) to a higher figure, probably around $1000.

When we hear news stories about declining crime nation wide, it’s largely due to redefinition and under reporting.

The sidewalk along The Embarcadero is covered in car window glass. It's pretty pathetic.

I'm borderline impressed at the speed at which San Francisco went from "one of America's most unique cities" to "generic dystopian nightmare".
