So far, the total number of tornadoes has been high, however the strengths, fortunately, have been of the weaker varieties.

And it feels like even those higher amount of tornadoes were limited to certain areas that just kept getting multiple storms, one after another (rather than a widespread event).

Obviously this event isn’t over and there is still a high risk for parts of Alabama, but you can definitely say this event has underperformed. Not a total bust, because there have been some violent tornadoes in some places today. I think one of the biggest factors has been storm mode and junk convection. During the first round, particularly in Alabama, there were basically too many storms. They choked each other off, used up energy, etc. With this second round that is ongoing, so far the line has been a large cluster of storms rather than breaking into discrete or semi-discrete supercells (at least so far).

That's it in a nutshell.

This was a messy, complicated setup with alot of variables. Storm mode hinged on those variables, and there was no way of knowing until things started unfolding. I still don't think there should have ever been a High Risk put out, certainly not at 1AM this morning. But, if the absolute worst case had panned out, we'd be wondering why they didn't have a High Risk.

That helped tremendously in North AL, pretty much North of Cullman. We didn't have the temps or the dewpoint that further south had. Us having lingering rain and very little sunshine was big. If that warm boundary had pushed north faster, it could have been much different.
