I would recommend applying to contractor positions as well, inform them you are willing to submit to a clearance investigation.

Thank You. I will look into contractor positions as well.

I honestly appreciate it.

You can't just get one. You have to work for the government or work as a contractor and the Government has to deem it nessceray for you to have one to do your job. A SC isn't hard to get, a TS is much tougher, and an SCI is where you want to end up.

A couple of military folk could tell you here but from what I've read on TD, all you need to do is look your recruiter dead in the eye and then jam your middle finger in a butthole.

Yours or theirs.

Instant NSA clearance either way.

I have a currently active Secret clearance.

You have to first pass an interview for a cleared position where the people that decide such things decide it's worth investing in a background check. I haven't been on that side of things so can't help you there. But that is the first step.

Once I was told to do so, I filled out form SF-86. It required me to fill in details of my life for the past seven years (why exactly seven I have no idea). Mostly where I lived and where I worked. My understanding is that investigators used this information to do lots of crosschecking to make sure I wasn't hiding anything that wasn't on a list somewhere.

You have to provide references. I have been on the other side of that one and so far every time I consented to be a reference I was interviewed by an FBI investigator. It was all very professional and each time I was contacted to make an appointment to visit me at a time convenient for me. Not unpleasant at all, mostly they were looking for big waving red flags.

Since I work in a cleared area I know some people who are TS/SCI, from what I understand at that level the investigation is much more focused and searching, the interviews are with experienced interrogators who are, ah, probing. Basically they are looking for fear of discovery of *anything* you might want to hide, even something trivial. The questions they ask aren't about finding bad stuff in your background, they're about finding out what you want to hide. If you fully disclose you're probably fine, you could be asked if you like to frick six year olds and if you respond with an enthusiastic "yes!" and provide pics you might face prosecution on those points but the investigators will probably say you aren't a security risk because you were honest about it.

Applying for a clearance is mostly about convincing your interviewer that you're worth investing 10-20 grand on proving it. The proving it part is showing that you aren't trying to hide anything you find embarrassing.

If you have to ask, you aren't qualified.

I have always wondered how a regular citizen can obtain one. From what I have researched, the primary holders of secret clearances are usually military. You can get one by working a job that can grant you one. However, how do you get into these jobs in the first place.

You need to have a company sponsor you, or go through the military.

Some companies don't want to have to spend the money required for the background check, so they want you to have one already - which you need to have gotten from service or from sponsorship with a previous employer. I believe they are good for about a year after leaving your previous employer.

When I got mine, I believe they check back 10 years on bankruptcy, and also whether any debts overdue by 180 days.

Go to Cartagena with the POTUS, rent some sloots, stiff them and then fiscally stiff them.

Wait, maybe that's how you lose your security clearance?

As to getting the clearance, as was said here earlier, if you have to ask, you'll never know.

Unless there is intent to defraud, you only have to keep IRS records for 7 years.

Bad things stay on your credit report for 7 years, except Chapter 7 which is 10 years.

7 years seems to be the standard for retaining official records.

Pretty much like everone has said, you have to already have job that requires a clearance whether military or civilian.

A secret clearance isn't too hard to get, but it is a little more in depth than your standard background check or getting a TWIC card. I had a secret for a years in the army and navy. My brother was a Nuke in the Navy (worked on carrier nuclear reactors) and his secret clearance got held up for a few months with no criminal record because he used to hang with a cousin who was a drug dealer. They at least contact jobs, close friends and family for a secret. For a top they scrutinize everything about you.
