But slavery still exists in this country. Says right there in the 13th amendment "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime"
So I think nationalizing this holiday is a hollow, PR campaign that does nothing but give politicians and bureaucrats another paid day off.

The UV/DV ratio on my comment is very telling. They make fun of people reeeeing about things all the time, but then reeeeee when we're about to get another day off work

A number of the PR and advertising agencies I work with are closed Friday in observance, so in celebration of this important day I'm golfing 18 in the morning and sitting in the bleachers at Wrigley in the evening.

I applaud the idea, but I’d like to contain the number of federal holidays.
Juneteenth is a day that exemplifies what America is about. The USA took the incremental steps the English had taken and built upon it with more progress towards freedom for more and more people.
The thread of Magna Carta, the English revolution, the American Revolution, the American Civil War and Emancipation Proclamation, Juneteenth, Suffrage for woman, Defeat of Jim Crow, Desegregation, and Homosexual rights are all part of the great effort of mankind to crawl out of the darkness of oppression by the strongest brutes.

No disguised racism here. I have zero problem with this. Slavery was one of the darkest chapters of this country’s history and we damn well should commemorate its end in some way. Making a Juneteenth national holiday doesn’t bother me at all.
