That's not how I read it

Senate Bill 470 calls for every student who qualifies for TOPS under the current rules to continue to get a portion of the scholarship, even if it can't be totally funded. This represents an alternative to the way a TOPS shortfall would be handled under the current state law -- by raising the ACT cutoff score needed for the scholarship.

Perhaps 24-25 might be a better compromise but 20 is just too damn low. That is literally the benchmark for even being eligible for most schools.

LSU has a minimum ACT of 22 for new students, for comparison purposes. Not every student at LSU should qualify for TOPS for sure

I agree but to me a 26 is on the high side. I have a dog in the fight as I have a high school senior but he's above that so the 26 doesn't affect him. I know kids who are taking dual enrollment classes and have a 4.0 through ULL while they also have a 4.0 or close to it in my sons class ... yet they didn't make a 26 on the ACT. I just think a 26 is a bit high.

26 ought to be the minimum to get into college. We shouldn't be paying to have to take music appreciation 101 to get an engineering degree.

Jindal was to one extreme

Now we don't have to worry about raising the minimum wage to $15 hour for fast food workers. The market will be full of underachieving high school graduates.

This is such a crock of shite and why should the govt state or otherwise be responsible for sendING people to college anyway?

There are programs and limits set. If you meet the limit you get it if not then find other ways.

What in the everloving frick is this shite right here? Since when is college part of one's destiny? How do existentialists and anti-predestination individuals feel about this?

You don't have to think too hard to read into the obvious subtext here.

NIH I agree. And I just can't be convinced that a student with a 24 won't do well in college.

A 24/25 is solid but someone who gets that score can easily get a 26 with a bit of prep.

Such a bullshite bill. Let's hurt everyone (including the best students) so that we don't quite hurt the lower performing students so bad.

LOL there wouldn't be college if you had to have a 26. Only 17 % of students taking the ACT have a 26 Composite or better. The average composite in LA is 19.2.

If it's such a crock of shite then why does Louisiana spend roughly 6 times the amount on prison upkeep as it does with TOPS on a yearly basis.

Tops is supposed to be for the brightest minds in LA so why don't we make sure that's what it's for.

If there wouldn't be so many shitty people in the state we wouldn't need to spend so much on prisons

It also isn't the state's responsibility to make sure someone is going to college but it is govt responsibility to ensure the safety of the people and prisons fall under that.

I think it is pretty crappy that TOPS is based only on the ACT score.

My son will have to take the ACT again to get a 26, he has a 23/24 right now and 4.0 in High School graduating with honors.
