They do that in Australia

This is only accomplished by using a legal loophole. By designating the "driver" as merely a caretaker for the majority of the drive this company is under the impression that it somehow avoids log rules for an on duty CDL driver. Assuming that individual is awake, alert, and monitoring the truck and its activities then he's technically an on duty driver meaning he gets 11 hours of legal driving time, 14 hours total working time. But once that clock is started, legally speaking, it can't be paused. Meaning his clock started while navigating the difficult portion pre interstate, so if a single driver was on duty to monitor the truck, ruh roh.
So either this was completely illegal, or they had a team of drivers (most likely 2) take shifts to monitor the truck throughout the route. Spoilers, a team of 2 drivers working in shifts can drive this exact route in the exact same amount of time as the computer did, assuming all speed limits are followed by both.

They would just need some autonomous drones to deploy and fight back

Ahh, to be truck driving in the 70s and 80s again.

Would probably need a dedicated lane with road crossings and such for all those daisy-chained semitrailers
That’s actually a thing in the Australian outback

Imagine how fast it would be if the self driving truck had a cocaine chip installed on the motherboard.

This does not bode well for lot lizards across America, many of which have not reached full vesting in their 401(k)s.

I was thinking the same thing. I really don't understand how a self-driving truck is faster unless they are driving faster.
As long as the truck still requires gas, and the human operator still has to take a piss, it doesn't matter who's doing the steering.

How do they program the trucks to drive side-by side at 65 mph for 10 miles?
Posted on 6/4/21 at 10:47 am to tiggerthetooth
and I have clients who always tell drivers not to use GPS because it sends them down the wrong road a few miles away
