It's definitely in Louisiana. My brother's wife just spent last weekend in the hospital over this.

ETA: Latest data is from June 18th, almost 2 weeks ago.

The parasite is usually found in topical or subtropical regions of the world though when detected in the U.S. it has been linked to various types of fresh produce.

quote:

At least 145 people across 17 states have been sickened in an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, prompting a federal investigation into the source of the infections as health officials warn that the true number of cases is likely higher.

New York has reported the highest number of cases, with between 31 and 80 infections of the intestinal illness. Cyclosporiasis is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which can trigger prolonged bouts of watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and fatigue.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the cases involve people who became ill between May 1 and June 16 after eating food in the United States.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is assisting with the investigation, but no specific source has been identified.

quote:

New York was the hardest-hit state as of June 18, the most recent day for which data is available. It accounts for the largest reported cluster with between 31 and 80 cases and is the only state with figures that high.

UPDATE:

quote:

At least 29 states are now investigating potential cases of cyclosporiasis, the parasite known to cause "explosive diarrhea," as it continues to spread across the U.S.

Update 7/13/2026 (can't get current map to upload)

quote:

Cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection known to cause severe diarrhea, have been reported in all but eight states, according to USA TODAY's reporting.

quote:

NBC News/Today's tally of state reports found more than 4,000 reported cases nationwide as of July 13, 2026, although those figures are not directly comparable to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's confirmed national surveillance count. Michigan has officially reported 2,640 cases to date.

I've never had chronic diarrhea, and I rehydrate on the occasion it does come, but a good water shite feels nice. Not sure if that's a hot take or not.

ETA: I have to be home. Sudden public onset is no fun.

This is no joke, folks. I've had it every day after lunch for the last 10 years.

Probably oughta go somewhere else for lunch, but man, them enchiladas is tasty.

Can’t say this enough, wash your hands and wash your produce. It’ll save you from a shite ton of these kind of issues.

That happens a couple times a week for me.

I didn’t know this was something to get freaked out over.

Best part is you are only on the toilet for like a minute.

Other than Elvis, how many have died from constipation?
