Seattle becomes 1st city to allow Uber drivers to unionize

The Seattle City Council today unanimously passed legislation that gives Uber, Lyft, taxi and other “for-hire” drivers the right to unionize — the first such law in the nation.

The ordinance, which still needs a signature from Mayor Ed Murray, gives drivers the ability to negotiate pay rates and employment conditions. Currently, these drivers are considered independent contractors and are not protected by traditional labor standards — including Seattle’s new $15 per hour minimum wage law. They also do not have collective bargaining rights covered by the National Labor Relations Act.

I wonder if Uber will pull out. If they stay, other states will do the same

Stupid greedy fricks are just going to shoot themselves in the foot.

Well, looks like Uber just became part of the same machine that they were designed to undercut in the first place. Bye, Uber. It was fun while it lasted.

Coincidentally, my worst Uber experience was in Seattle. The driver couldn't find the airport rental car drop off location even after calling me three times. Eventually took a cab like a poor.

Even if you had a noob, they should be able to read signs.

And amazingly enough, it's one of the hottest real estate markets in the country.

Not surprised one bit that it was Seattle. Austin will be next in line just because Seattle did it

Well I hope that as a business model Uber is able to sustain itself in the long run. As usual, the liberal cities will screw something like this up, but the majority still want this free market service.

What's stopping Uber from continuing to use non-union employees? I'd think Uber would be fine because the people that drive for them do it are not career drivers, just people looking for extra cash.

So what if an Uber driver wants to continue operating as an independent contractor?
Posted on 12/14/15 at 10:11 pm to c on z
Does this mean Uber's not really worth $40 billion?

Isn't price gouging unions what Uber was created to combat?
