Is it possible for uber to simply shut down their services in the area?

Allowing people the freedom to do something they want to do makes them greedy?

Damn.

Could this be an effort to leverage political power in cities where they are not allowed to pickup passengers at airports?

Just about every driver I've talked to here is against them unionizing. This is just our shite socialist city council getting into business that they shouldn't.

Uber doesn't really hire anyone. They are independent contractors. When they do start to hire people there will be nothing that requires them to hire union employees, although they are not allowed to fire someone just because they joined a union.

Uber will never be required to agree to any union contracts, nor will they be required to pay union set wages or to be a "closed shop". That's not how it works. All this does is allow workers to organize and form a union. Whether or not they are successful at getting what they want is up to market forces.

The beauty here is the labor market is so large - anyone with a car and free time can drive for Uber because the barriers to entry are so low (just undergo a background check and submit an app, which Uber will apparently rubberstamp). If some drivers decide they won't work for Uber unless it raises rates, there will probably be tens or hundreds lined up to replace them.

Government license infers freedom?

I do not think you know the meaning of the words you use.

Uh, allowing someone to collective bargain = not freedom? Okay.

Has the NLRB ruled that Uber drivers are independent contractors?

So, once again you have no substance to add other than "nah uh". Neat!

Currently he ICs do not have the right to create a union so that they can attempt to collective bargain. After the ordinance they will have the right to do that if they choose to. That is increased freedom, son.
