Scientists find a new Earth-like planet

Scientists discovered the planet dubbed Kepler-1649c while reviewing old observations from NASA’s Kepler space telescope. The telescope was retired in 2018, and computers misidentified 1649c on the first look. Researchers recently took another look, and that second look made the discovery.

First the good news. Kepler-1649c is only 1.06 times larger than Earth, and the light from its star is 75 percent what Earth gets from our Sun. That means its temperature may be similar. In fact, scientists said today that “out of all the exoplanets found by Kepler, this distant world … is most similar to Earth in size and estimated temperature." The bad news is Kepler-1649c is orbiting a red dwarf, not a star like our Sun, and red dwarfs are known for stellar flare-ups that make the environment of any nearby planet “challenging” for potential life. It’s also 300 light years from our home planet, so we’ll definitely need warp drive to take a close look in person.
