The Citi Double Cash card is great. You get 2% on everything (1% when you buy and 1% when you pay). My wife and I got one in April 2017 and the cash we earned paid for our trip to universal in March.

I have a Southwest card and a Cap 1 Venture. Southwest is great for domestic flights and have added some international locations in the past few years. We've used SW points to fly to Costa Rica and Cabo in the last 2 years. Cap 1 Venture points can be used for mostly anything. On the vacations above where we used the SW points above we've used Cap 1 venture points on hotels and resorts.

cap 1 Venture card seems to be very popular and may be the route i try. if nothing else just getting it and paying for this vacation and nothing else will be worth it just to get the points to use later. the 95 dollar fee is the only downside i see to this one, and I'm not worried about the apr as i will pay off any time is used. if its going good may start paying some other things with it and just swap money with my debit card while earning points.

will also check out the money board, not only have i never been on there, I'm not sure i even ever paid much attention that there was such a thing

If you’re disciplined enough to not overspend with credit and pay the full balance off every month, why not? You don’t pay any interest charges if you pay your balance in full. So you get the cash back or rewards perk without it costing you any extra.

I put just about every daily purchase on a credit card and just login to the app on my phone to payoff the balance every week or 2 so that the balance to payoff when the statement closes is small.

Another pro is if your debit card info is ever stolen, the thief can drain your bank account before you notice and it may take a while for the bank’s fraud dept to reverse all the charges. If a credit card number is stolen, at least the funds in your checking account are still there while you wait for the fraudulent charges to be reversed. I never use my debit card for anything other than ATM withdrawls.

Meh, possibly but I have the Discover It Card and the Citi Double Cash. It’s easy to just log in every few months and apply the cash back to the balance of my current statement.

Step 1: Acquire Chase Sapphire Reserve
Step 2: Acquire Chase Freedom (NOT Freedom Unlimited)
Step 3: Acquire a 2% Cash Back card like Citi Double Cash

Use CSR at restaurants on travel and dining. Get Global Entry with it as well (reimbursed) + enjoy $300 travel credit each year as well as 50k point bonus when you spend $4k in 3 months

Use Freedom for 5% points on quarterly categories

Use Double Cash on everything else

Chase accrues Ultimate Rewards Points. If you have a CSR and redeem the points through their portal, they're worth 1.5x more. Whatever points you earn with your Freedom can be transferred to your CSR balance and redeemed for 1.5x extra as well. Use these points for travel

Use statement credits for the Citi card

Profit

Nice.

I have a similar strategy, except I also have the Amazon Prime credit card (extra 5% cash back on Amazon purchases) and then use Target Red Card (extra 5% off groceries/target in store and online)

It's a lot of free money if you are responsible and never miss a payment.

Do this, play the sign up bonus game. Credit cards are important to financial strength. You should actually receive POSITIVE value from CCs . My family of 5 is able to take trips 1 to 2 times per year..... for FREE. I have huge amounts of spend however, but none the less, the opportunity is there. Pay your bill every month and you are building strong credit and paying no interest. All cards with high annual fees have ways to get most of the money back. Amex offers $200 in Airline credits, $120 in uber credits and other various credits to offset the cost of the annual fees, for example.

Chase has a 5/24 rule, meaning you can only get 5 new CC every 24 months or chase will deny you.

Get them first. The good cards have high annual fees, but if you are proactive they will actually earn you far more then the annual fee.

For example, the chase sapphire reserve has a $450 annual fee, but you get $300 of credit back on "travel" purchases. So your annual fee is dropped to $150 immediately. Not to mention all the other benefits.

Best travel cards - Amex Platinum, Amex Gold. Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred. Citi Prestige, citi premier.

If you don't have great credit, you might not qualify for these cards yet.

There are ways to get referral links, which will give you even larger sign up bonuses. Message me if you want more details.

Look up things like the Chase trifecta and Amex trifecta on youtube.

IMO, not getting free shite for doing what you are already doing (spending money) makes no sense. Don't go spend money you normally wouldn't, but you are going to buy groceries and gas. You are going to go to restaurants..... why not get free travel out of it ?

Yep, my strategy was more of a general deal. you can really rake with the specialized 5% cards based on your needs. Wish I had a Target near me to get that red card

SO (no pics) and i going on vacation in a few months and was thinking about picking up a rewards card of some sort to pay for it all and earn a little back (gas, miles, something) vs just paying for it out right with bank card and earning nothing. dumb idea? pros, cons? is it worth doing this, or more trouble than its worth? currently neither of us have any credit cards or credit card debt.

Look at the annual fee, figure out how much they give you back and then do the math and see if you spend enough (on the card) to make the rewards worth it.

Also factor in the times you skip a payment and get raked over the coals on interest.

join a credit union

they will give you credit cards in the 5-10% range(pending credit score), and have point cards to boot.

Cap 1 SAVOR card has a $500 bonus if you spend $3k in the 1st 3 months and 4% cash back on dining and entertainment. Discover has 5% quarterly on different categories (this month is grocery stores) plus they match 100% your 1st year's rewards.

In a nutshell, Chase Sapphire Rewards is the best rewards program I've used.

Not only can you use it to get cash back like other cards, but you transfer points directly to a number of airline and hotels. Typically, the redemption ratio is so much better by transferring Chase points to an airline or hotel and booking with miles/points on their websites.

I used this method for a flight for 3 recently and saved nearly $200 more than just getting a cash reimbursement.

Not sure if anyone mentioned as I didn’t read everything, but Southwest has an awesome deal going. Get the CC and spend a certain amount and get a free companion pass for a year. Free +1 on any flight you take with them for a year
