LAGUNA NIGUEL – It’s been two months, and Kathie Gross is still rattled by what she calls the “most terrifying experience” of her life.

The 49-year-old mother had just left a spin class at Monarch Bay Plaza and was driving home on Crown Valley Parkway when her cellphone rang.

She answered and heard what she thought was her daughter Jordan’s terrified voice: “Mom, Mom! They took me and these men put me in a van.”

Her heart racing, Gross gripped the steering wheel and sped down the rain-slicked road, heading toward St. Mary’s School in Aliso Viejo, where her daughter was in the sixth grade.

“Oh my God. Jordan! Where are you?” she screamed into the phone.

Then a man said, “Is this Kathie Gross?”

He continued, “Listen, Missy, you better not call anyone. My guys have got him.”

That last word – “him” – gave Gross the courage to hang up and call St. Mary’s. She reached the main office and for the next 15 minutes waited as staff tried to locate her 12-year-old daughter.

“Now, I’m on Alicia (Parkway) driving like I could have killed 20 people and I’m still on hold with the school,” Gross said earlier this week. “On the other line, I keep getting ‘no-caller ID’ calls coming in. At one point, I’m thinking I’m having a heart attack. With screeching wheels, I finally make it to the school and they came out and said they had her.”

The “virtual kidnap” incident, which occurred April 19, is among a recent spate reported to police agencies in coastal and south Orange County. Law enforcement has seen the number of reported incidents rise in coastal communities throughout Southern California in the past three months.

Nationwide, the FBI – which investigates the scams in tandem with local law enforcement agencies – says the schemes, which are prosecuted as violent acts, affect hundreds of people each year. Agents began opening cases within the past five years and prosecuted their first case in 2015.

On Tuesday, June 19, the FBI issued a warning to the public: “Residents of Orange County, CA, are reporting threatening phone calls during which they were told to wire money or else their loved one would be in harm’s way. Learn to protect yourself from virtual kidnapping schemes, a crime affecting U.S. communities

If I dont recognize a number or its "unknown" I simply don't pick up.

That doesnt stop spoofers, but it does stop like 90% of scam calls.

I'd probably ignore their call anyway

If the number isn't in my contacts I don't answer

Why I dont answer #s I dont know. Frankly we need laws that make giving out private #s, addresses, etc illegal. Screw the post office, and states that give out their citizens DL info This is all private data, and in todays world we need to look at it differently.

Dont know how we are supposed to stop ID thefts when we are required to have everything so public.

Our old arse leaders in our capitals or county seats, need to catch up with how these people use things.

Crazy.

The worst part is when your kids actually get kidnapped you’ll think it’s a scam.

Happened to an older couple I know a few years ago.

They got a call about their granddaughter who was in college in Nola. Caller gave very specific info about her whereabouts and personal info like car make and model. LOTS of info. Didn't kidnap her, but threatened to do so.

Had them scared shitless and demanded $5k to leave her alone.

Got police involved and luckily there was no real danger.

I had some ethnic (couldn't pinpoint where) guy call me thinking I was my dead grandpa. He's been dead since 1990. The guy said he was my cousin, that he wrecked into a woman that was seven months pregnant, and was in jail in Chicago. Needed $7k for bail and lawyer's fees.

I played along for a while, until he asked if he could "count with me". He was trying to ask if he could count on me, but didn't speak English well. I confirmed that he actually asked to count with me. I said "Sure. One, two, three, four, five". He said, "No man, I need this money. Can I count with you?". After counting to seven, he said, "You know what man? frick you", and hung up.

Glad I could waste fifteen minutes of his day

They did this with Owlie and his mom told them that she’d blow them every week if they’d keep the reprehensible little bastardo.

That's one of the difficulties of being a parent, you have to answer every call.
