I did the same in school. I’m white but it was informative in all the good ways. The whole trip was. About how poor basically EVERYBODY was and how hard a life and how nonexistent literacy was in the depression era for everybody.
If I went in a field trip to participate in the things my Irish ancestors have done, I’d be down. I love beer, fiddles, cold rain, and potatoes.

Should have just gone on a Car Wash field trip instead.

Yeah, where poor people of every stripe picked fricking cotton.
Why do these ignorant people think blacks have a monopoly on things everyone experienced?
Picking cotton, nooses, fried chicken.
You’d think the world had never existed before africans came and helped us poor ignorant white folk do everything, we were so damn helpless

My white great grandparents were sharecroppers but they didn't pick cotton. They were on a tobacco farm in Georgia. From what I understand they were literally dirt poor.. As in the small house they lived.. The flooring was the ground.
Oh.. And they didn't have the opportunity to get much education because they stopped going to school after 3rd or 4th grade, so they could stay home and work.

Did you have great grandparents that weren’t white?
Are you descended from something else?
Maybe a bicycle? Or some cooked pasta?

I'm white and my mama picked cotton.

Never came up with any self hating work songs though. I’ve got a few work crew songs from old Americana on my Spotify, they’re not anything like that.

Where can I send a check for her reparations? She looks like she's missing meals.

My dad picked cotton by hand and plowed with a mule in Bradley County, AR. When do I get my check?

My white granddaddy sharecropped in Latta, SC in the 1930's and I don't get triggered by a cotton field.
I hoed cotton every summer as a kid growing up in North La (and got shite pay for it since I was a kid). The only thing that annoys me is when people that have never even seen an actual cotton field bitch about cotton.

Hopefully after me, I'm the bigger victim! I grew up in the middle of a cotton field in the Mississippi Delta and got crop dusted daily.

I picked Cotton living in the delta. Also picked turnips.

No shite. Nothing can wake you up quite as well on a Saturday morning as one of those old crop dusters buzzing by about 100 feet above your house. The ones they used where I grew up were the Stearman PT-17 (or at least so close to it as to not make a difference) and they rattled the windows when they flew by.
