Sort of a spin-off of the moving a meeting forward vs back thread.

If I tell you I would like to meet next Monday, what date do you think I’m talking about?

Which ever Monday comes soonest, ie the next Monday.
The real question is, why are you using the word "next?"

what day is it? If you said that today, I would assume the 23rd. I've always grown up on this/next. So the 16th would be this Monday.

Now, if you had said that at 7am on Tuesday morning I'd probably just ask for clarification.

If you tell me this on Tuesday I'll assume next Monday is the coming Monday, but if you say next Monday on a Saturday I'll assume two Mondays from now.

This Monday = Monday the 16th

Next Monday = Monday the 23rd

People who say "next" when meaning the upcoming day are unhinged. If you want to say Monday the 16th, just say Monday.

Today at work, an email was sent saying “we’re going to meet next Monday”. To me, that means 5/23. The sender meant this coming Monday, 5/16

And all confusion would be avoided if the sender had just said Monday.

why in the absolute frick would they not just say "we're going to meet Monday"? Everyone on earth would know they mean 3 days from now.

Exactly. Is there some danger of people thinking that this meeting is being planned to occur in the past?

If only somebody could come up with a grid, with numbered boxes representing the different dates in each month. Then we could just say the date and let the monkeys, that get easily confused, look at the grid and figure out, easily, what day we mean.

All of these "arguments" could be solved if people just spoke more concisely. There's no reason to use the word "next". Just like there's no reason to move a meeting "forward". If you're moving a meeting (or any planned event), just state the time and date.

Of course. It’s why I wish people lived their daily lives with a limited word count similar to Twitter posts. Unfortunately we live in a world filled with idiots and savages that use words like “next” when they mean “this”
