Not super difficult to comprehend that if he can pair an electric truck with his autonomous driving system, then you simply set it up so that all trucks and deliveries are done in non-peak hours.

It's a long ways away, but once that happens it immediately revolutionizes all existing travel grids.

I’ve been reading that his most impact will be on the power source for homes. He can use a system very similar to what is in his car to power an entire home. Then charge it via solar.

That is game changing and makes some very entrenched people very uncomfortable.

I'm all about disruptive technologies.

In the age of trump where government shoving electric cars down out throat is no longer an issue why would people root so hard for him to fail?

Environmental Nazis never understand that just because we don't embrace having a gun to our head to "fix the planet" that somehow we are rooting against cleaner energy, innovation and more responsible companies.

Pure electric trucks will never work for long haul (>300mi in a day). They are best suited for inter-city delivery trucks and moving things between hubs.

Hybrid trucks will are being developed that will work for long haul applications, and they can also be used for short stuff as well.

Eta: The people at Tesla know this. Bigger trucks just gain more publicity for the company, so that's why they are building them. I'd still like to see the final tare weight of the Tesla semi. It's great that it's fast, but being fast doesn't make a driver any extra money

What would be the problem with raising the battery capacity by placing extra batteries in the first few feet of the trailer?

I pull up with my 300 mile truck and connect to a charged, loaded trailer with a 1000 miles of battery life. Once connected, the trailer would help supply power to the truck.

For starters, if your customized Tesla trailer gets fricked up by some idiot with a forklift, you're screwed. Secondly, that's extra weight and space that you can't haul. Operations are designed for a certain length of van trailer (which is the only thing it could be hooked up to). Thirdly, it would have to be connected to the both truck drivetrain and cooling systems....a redesign.

IIRC, the Tesla doesn't even come with a sleeper cab

I'm not looking at the scenario with thoughts of the independents having a tesla rig; I'm looking at it from the perspective of somebody like walmart or one of the major haulers using this type of setup.

I edited my above post. I'm betting that they are planning on using them as final delivery trucks only. UPS, USPS, garbage trucks, busses, from hub to final destination, etc.

One of the biggest problems faced with both hybrid and pure EV vehicles is providing the fueling stations. They all want them to be zero emissions, which would require them to build or contract out ways to produce and deliver that power to trucks. Hybrid trucks running off of hydrogen wouldn't be as hard to do as pure electric. There's just so much heat transferred when you're moving that much energy

Thats a time in the future I really hope doesnt become the norm, unless it is to ONLY replace the shitty ones. Truck drivers are better drivers than 80-85% of regular passenger vehicle drivers out there.

A lot of weight and space at that.

Pure electric is just not a viable alternative for OTR diesel trucks.

I have been following Nikola Motors for a while. Even applied for a job there, but they are looking for people with aerodynamics, electrical, and computer engineering backgrounds. They seem to have the most plausible technology and business plan, but haven't produced any functional models to run tests from. The problem with them is that they are all uber-nerds, and keep modifying their original designs instead of testing the concept first.

Tesla definitely stole their cab design

Thats pretty cool, but put 40K in the trailer and then see how it does.

Throughout history there have been no shortage of people with PhDs that have published work on why some technical problem of that time period would never be solved. There were more than a few that demonstrated why it would be impossible for man to land on the moon.

Vast difference between technical challenges involving space flight and proposing things that violate some of the fundamental laws of physics. People like you are why scams like Fontus and Solar Roadways get as much crowd funding as they did. Wowed by the concept yet bereft of the education to know the claims were/are bullshite from the very beginning.

What if the trailer itself was a battery?

It’s doable.

Or, you set it up just like the normal trucks are set up and put 4 heavy duty long-life batteries in each truck. Some of our trucks only have 3 batteries, but they typically come with 4. For trailers needing to be refrigerated, then you could have seperate batteries in the trailer for that, but they arent used to power the truck, only the trailer.

Teslas catch fire hitting road debris, imagine a battery the size of a tractor trailer catching fire. That would be a major HAZMAT response.

The difference is that normal truck batteries weigh 100lbs each, and Tesla's four battery packs weigh 11,000 total IIRC
