I was spreading mulch and found a baby bird that fell out of it's nest. I got my ladder and put it back in the nest, but never considered starting a thread about it.

I took a baby bird to LSU vet I found in the middle of the road a few weeks ago.
I hope it made it. It seemed strong so I think it turned out ok.

Those brown birds called House Sparrows, really aren't sparrows, plus they are total assholes and will destroy and pick apart baby blue birds. Should have killed it.

Uh, yeah they are. They are an Old World sparrow, family Emberizidae. New World sparrows are of the family Passerelidae, formerly of Emberizidae.
They aren't closely related to our native sparrows, but they are most definitely sparrows.

So this is incorrect?
quote:
The House Sparrow, Passer domesticus (also known as the English Sparrow), is actually not a sparrow at all but a weaver finch introduced to this country from Europe in the mid-1800s. The male is easily identified by its black throat and chest, which makes him appear as if he is wearing a bib

Is it an African or European Sparrow?

It sounds like you could be directly responsible for pushing over 100 ants to the brink of starvation.
All for 1 bird.
All for 1 bird.

Yes, yes it is. Weaver finches are in a completely different family than house sparrows. DNA studies put them in Passeridae (I mispoke earlier), not Ploceidae that they were historically in. The two are more closely related than house sparrows are to new world sparrows, but they are still sparrows. Some texts refer to them as "weaver sparrows".
If anything, considering the house sparrow was described prior to any of our species, it is the "true" sparrow. Why people get into that nonsense is beyond me though.

I do not know how to post pics.
It was small enough to fit in my hand. Grant it I have big hands, but he was tiny.
Brown coating with black stripes; small beak tan colored. He looked exhausted and dehydrated. He slept like a log and drank some water. Flew out of his box; the flew to his tree.
Ants would have killed him. Found one ant in his eye. He is fine though. Went back home. God speed young fella.

Compassion towards animals, or lack thereof, is a true measure of a man’s character. Never trust a person that is cavalier about the suffering of animals.

I raise Chickens, GOATS, and fish. Have an 11 acre lake. Have had countless tragedies and great miracles while living here all these years. From burying my favorite lady Goat to seeing the birth of her best kid who was a blessing for years. Catching big fish to feeding them parts of their dead cousins I fileted for supper, it is always the ebbs and flows of nature.
Also had two geese that flew in earlier this spring. They hatched 3 goslings that were yellow little fur balls. They disappeared though (the family). Hope they made it.
Very blessed and I thank him daily for the chances I get to give back to his creation.
