We used to have family in Matador. That was a desolate place 40 years ago when I was a kid.

I grew up near there. Almost everyone I graduated high school will moved. There's just no industry to keep you in small west Texas towns anymore. You either have to be in agriculture or oil (if o&g is good). Or maybe the customer service industry if you can keep a business open long enough. Some trades may have success. But neither will net you a very good income.

I can't imagine you would need a ton to have a decent life up there. $50k goes a lot further there than in say Dallas.

Also, if you get one of the many WFH jobs paying $100k+ you could own half the town

I am familiar with Floydada. It used to have two major railroads serving it. Now it has none.

Corn,cotton,cattle,and oil.

The things we need the most.

I wouldn’t mind living in West Canaan.

Yep. I have family in southwest Nebraska where there is nothing and houses start around $35k for a comparable house that is over $100k here

I run that stretch quite a bit going to and from Colorado.

It is usually around 11:00 at night and I take a nap in the rest stop with the horse corrals. I started doing that when I was hauling a horse back and forth.

It’s a really sad statement when the best place on a 5-6 hour stretch of road is a freaking rest stop.

When driving down from Denver headed to Amarillo after you get of the I-25 at Raton Pass and onto US-87 there is a long stretch of tiny little dead towns one after another.

I also take this drive a bunch. After Dalhart, you hit Texline. I don’t think I’ve seen much there except a school and some grain silos. It doesn’t get much better in New Mexico. There’s a little town called Clayton that was home to some rodeo great. There are a couple of hotels and a grocery store there.

Sounds like you’re describing Loving County. Is one of the highest per capita income counties/parishes in the country. Heart of the Delaware Basin in the Permian.

I think in 2020 is was something like 60 people voted, and all but about 3 or 4 went Trump. Population in the most recent census was maybe 64.

I actually really enjoy the drive through the panhandle and into New Mexico. We go this way every year to ski and while there may not be much, it's an interesting part of the country to take in. Once you get into New Mexico the views get very pretty as you transition from high desert to the mountains

The four Southeastern NM counties (Lea, Eddy, Roosevelt, Chavez) are way more like West Texas than New Mexico. At least in how they vote and how their local governments operate.

And? Is this supposed to be a revelation?

Because *you* have seen and know exactly what's happening in America's rural towns?

Please share your own detailed observations as you driven through the towns of American "Outback". I'd be sincerely interested.
