Varsity Sports is in the middle of its "hot 100". One of the goals is a 40 mile week and a 50 mile week. Some of the people doing it don't have great physiques. Also, the full clip of that Oatmeal article you posted is hilarious.

Do you guys that put in this many miles do anything else like play golf, party etc?

I like to party and drink lots of beer. I'm married but no kids.

In the best shape of my life I ran just about 21 miles per week (4 8ish minute miles 4x, 2.5 miles of sprints and hills 2x, Sundays off). I also did a decent amount of weight training at the time and weighed 195 on a 6'00 framed (not an ideal runners build).

I personally knew several guys (semi-serious runners) who easily doubled that.

Most runners I know dont have great physiques. I think most of them are running for health and to compete with themselves though and not for aesthetics.

I'm 31, have a kid and a wife and full time job. I have no idea how I would ever find the time to run 40-50 miles in a week. I run halfs, 10ks etc and the most I will put in a single month is probably 85 and that is only one month per year. Just that alone takes a lot of getting up really early to run, going to bed early, and not much drinking. Do you guys that put in this many miles do anything else like play golf, party etc?

Exactly.

Finding the 3-5 hours per week is tough enough. Much less 10-12.

Not gonna happen during football season.

I know a good number like that. It's a way for some to have goals and be challenged physically. My wife and I signed up for the Dopey Challenge. We're idiots for paying money to do that. Huge fricking idiots.

Yes and no, the OP's question which i quoted and then posted a response was:

quote:

How are people who claim to run 40-50 or more miles/week: 1) not in great shape, I mean 6 pack/ripped, and 2) not really fast.

and i was saying that 9-10 minute pace is not running. The intervals training would be faster which would then be running. Which was my fricking point. Then you got all arse-bent because you were offended about my saying that 9:30 minute pace is not that impressive for a marathon. And its not. I see plenty of fat dudes hit that pace at marathons. Which brings us back to the OP and if you could read into it, you would see that we agree that the people he is talking about are lying and are not in fact running.

Any tips for beginners? I've been running daily [rest on Sundays] for almost 4 weeks now.

My best 10K is 54:52. You can call me a competitive jogger.

And I've seen plenty of "in-shape" people who couldn't do it in 6-hours.

ETA: That's a 13:45 pace

Ok. If we call it jogging will that make you happy?

Probably not since...

35-40 miles a week after a year I would be running low 40 minute 10K’s again easy

my legs would fall off. I can break 50min now depending on conditions, but training enough for this 40yo to get into low 40s would probably cause more harm than good. i'm running in the 20-30 miles per week range now. i don't really care about speed. running is just the easiest regular exercise to fill in for when i'm not doing something more interesting.

so why 9 min pace running, but 9:30 jogging?

to a Kenyan, 6 min pace is jogging

it's all relative

I gained a lot of weight in law school. Before that, I did cross-country and did 40-ish miles a week. Now I'm trying to get back on the horse and I've made it back to about 7 a week, alternating running and walking. It's not that much, but I really missed that feeling of sprinting and running that I used to have and am glad to be getting back to it. I doubt anyone cares, but my progress makes me very happy.

for any serious runner, 40 miles is not that hard during a week

when I was a "serious" runner, I averaged 40-50 per week easily

tempo runs = 6-8 miles (3 days/week)
sprints = 2-3 miles (1 per week)
long run = 14-20 miles (1 per week)

and that is with 2 days off

my big weeks were around 60-70 miles

Ditto for me.

Now I just don't have the desire to get back to that. Earlier this month I hit a 40 mile week for the first time in ages. But we were on vacation, and I could sleep until a reasonable hour, get up and run, and still get home before the kids were awake. I can't do that normally without getting up at oh-dark-thirty. And that's just not appealing like it once was.

I still run 4-6 miles a few times a week, mostly between 7:00 and 7:30 pace. But the desire to do much more or go much faster is no longer there.

4 different Kenyans have run a sub 2:04 marathon. That's a 4:44 pace...
