I ran .25 when I started in '97 and I thought that was too far.

Definitely a bad example especially for people who just run distance at a particular pace.

I will admit my mindset is a little narrow but I consider running not just knocking out 5 miles at a 10 minute mile pace 6 times a week, but mixing it up with intervals and speed work.

I will also admit everyone has different goals when running and considering its a good for you no matter what congrats to everyone who knocks out a few miles each week!

It seems every other runners in some threads claim that type of mileage, some of that seems hard to believe.

I don't really get that from here, there are a handful of people who make those claims but not "every other runner" claiming that. Also, 40 miles per week is easy and I don't really raise an eyebrow when someone claims that.

How are people who claim to run 40-50 or more miles/week: 1) not in great shape, I mean 6 pack/ripped, and 2) not really fast. Even in my late 30s if I ever got back to running 35-40 miles a week after a year I would be running low 40 minute 10K’s again easy. Are they not running hard enough, not occasionally interval training and mixing in track/speed work?

I would be willing to bet, most if not all of the people on this board who actually run 40+ miles a week can run a 10k in under 43 minutes or are in really good physical appearance shape.

So, the answer is, they are either lying or they probably are "fast".

Running is based on speed not distance. That's not that tough of a concept to figure out.

In my opinion, you gotta be lower than 9 min/mile which is technically a rate not a speed...

ETA: damn, that really pissed some people off hahaha

I know it’s the OT where everyone is strong, fast, and sexy but I read a lot of the fitness/running threads where tons of people claim to run upwards of 40 miles a week. I have running background but even in my competitive running days 40+ miles was a heavy week.

How are people who claim to run 40-50 or more miles/week: 1) not in great shape, I mean 6 pack/ripped, and 2) not really fast. Even in my late 30s if I ever got back to running 35-40 miles a week after a year I would be running low 40 minute 10K’s again easy. If everyone who ran regularly could run a 10K in the low 40's, then you wouldn't be able to come on here and feel superior to everyone.

ETA: my wife can run a 10K in about 42 - 43 minutes...but she wins every race around here and places in New Orleans races...so....there's that.

Do you know how ludicrous it sounds to someone who RAN 26.2 miles in 4 hours that they didn't run because they averaged over a 9 minute pace?
