Trinity has always sent a good deal of kids to jesuit
In the last ten years or so Trinity only sent 1-2 kids a year to Jesuit, except for the past 2 years when it increased to 8-10 a year. But my point was that Jesuit does not want a class full of just CBS and Stuart Hall kids, other schools are starting to send more kids to Jesuit, and so CBS is no longer a guaranteed feeder into Jesuit.

Ben Franklin in Orleans is a much better school. Lusher High is likely on par with Mandeville.
They both are, but they are magnet schools.

Moran wasn't run off because he tried to morph Rummel into Jesuit.

A lot of St Catherine kids go to Jesuit. I would say half my class went to Jesuit.

A lot of Trinity kids go to Franklin as well.

I guess for 20k a year im not impressed with 25% out of 301 the past four yeàrs remaining in state.
Now there are some great schools on the list, but looking at the percentages suggest only one kid, maybe two attended them, and that most went to your typical public school. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I don't need to pay twice tuition to get those results.
I could be wrong though, I'm just reading between the lines since the absolute numbers seem to be conveniently left off, but maybe I missed it.
Any stat saying 100%(or whatever) of their kids attend college doesn't mean anything. That's self selection of the student body in action there.
I'm not saying its a bad school by any means, I'm just not seeing the value.

Is there a high school in Louisiana where more than 75% of the graduates leave the state for college? I would be shocked if so.

TOPS changed the game for Newman and other expensive schools for college choices. In my class 2 kids went to LSU and 3 to Tulane out of 83.

I'm not comparing Newman to Podunk high school, I'm comparing it to its tuition costs in relation to other schools, keeping in mind its affluent parents.
Glassman, makes a lot of sense.

Haven't read this whole thread, but from I have read, there's two points I need to make
1) No student who has been accepted to Jesuit has ever been turned away due to lack of $$$.
2)Property taxes in LA are among the lowest in the nation. Don't be shocked when LA public schools are also among the poorest in the nation.

Yea but more pertinent to this thread where are the other half going these days? Not Rummel apparently. I went to St. Francis Xavier in the 80s and the vast majority of the boys went to Rummel. Now are they going to Holy Cross and Brother Martin? I guess so. I bet a lot of potential Rummel kids are going to Haynes and Thomas Jefferson too, which did not exist not too long ago.
And Moran was NOT an idiot. He tried to change an ingrained culture and was unsuccessful. His replacement has done worse, and is now forced to resign as well.

Also the great expense of college has changed the game. Even a Newman parent has to think hard about spending $240,000 to send their child to their alma mater when LSU is so affordable. 60% of Jesuit's class and 50% of Franklin's also go to LSU now.

You could raise property taxes to 75% , put a border around the state to not let anyone out and the schools would still be among the poorest in the nation.

No doubt. My class of 83 sent 12 kids to Vanderbilt, many to Duke, Emory and the like, and multiple to multiple Ivy's. You won't see that again with the current cost structure of education.

You don't have to be a Blue Blood to go to Jesuit. I know guys from a wide array of backgrounds who went there...

You don't think that would increase teacher quality? I only mention this because I know NY public schools are among the best in the nation... With the highest property taxes as well. The only difference is that in New Orleans you pay tuition rather than property taxes.

The Homestead Exemption is a joke and should be done away with.

I think a better barometer of a high school's excellence right now is how many graduates are getting scholarships to decent schools, and of course how they perform in college.
Posted on 2/24/15 at 5:09 pm to vistajay
Agreed. Many of those did get scholarships. We had Jefferson to UVA and a Morehead scholar to UNC as well. My friend who went to Dartmouth got about a 3/4 scholarship and his dad was a neuro surgeon at Oschner.
