re: Routine traffic stop - Do you have a right to speak with the officer's supervisor?

I mean if it’s an unlawful stop and they are asking for ID illegally why wouldn’t I want to ask for their boss?
Because they’re not going to resolve it on the side of the road and just because you say “supervisor” doesn’t mean the stop grinds to a halt and you just get to wait.

Why are you trying to justify illegal detainment?

In what world do you think a cop’s going to go “yeah, I was just bored and I’m fricking with you” and drives off? Of the million bodycam videos that are out there now of irate people throwing an adult hissy fit about getting stopped, I’ve seen maybe 1 where they had a point. 99% of them are “you can’t prove I was speeding” or “you have to tell me why you stopped me first before I provide ID.”
But have fun getting tased I guess.

No.

What's the chances that the supervisor shows up and tells the other officer that he is doing an unlawful stop and asking for id illegally?

I like to believe officers, by and large, are just doing their job even if we end up on the shite end of the stick in a small town speed trap. It's not like I'm trying to get pulled over. I'm not going to waste any more of my time or the officer's time arguing there on the spot because he probably has his mind made up what he's going to do before he exits his car. If I feel that strongly, I can live to fight another day.

Only if you have the right haircut.

are supervisors required to go visit every traffic citation if being requested?
It’s incredible how fricking stupid people act from watching social media. I love watching people turn a simple traffic citation into felony arrest simply from refusing to give up their ID or rolling down a window.

Almost every state it’s legal for an officer to get your id on a traffic stop. It’s obstruction of justice not to comply. Arguing with the officer on the side of the road is going to get you additional charges. The time to argue your case is in court with an attorney.

I see vids where folks keep repeating it as if it is the golden ticket to getting out of trouble.
Most cops aren't that smart, it's better to say yes sir no sir and figure it out in court if you think the cop is wrong. Arguing with them rarely works out.

I never had the tits for that anyway.

SFP will be here soon to tell us the law on why a Sergeant has to comply to this request.

I would imagine its a requirement in about every state to provide ID if operating a vehicle, no? I do my dead level best to avoid interacting with police because I figure they have more important things to do and I don't like kowtowing to government officials to prevent there escalating an insignificant event so I am cordial and hand over the documents they ask for. If they start asking where I have been or where I am going I will ask why they need to know and, depending on their answer, I may actually tell them, but only in general terms like "back there" or "up there" or "over there". They can write all the tickets they damn well please, the fines are not expensive, and I ain't bending the knee to not get a ticket, either write it or not. I have been stopped maybe 10 times in 44 years of driving with a license (never got stopped in the 3 years prior to being licensed) and I have gotten 3 tickets in that time....all for speeding and all for doing less than 10 MPH over the speed limit. All told maybe $300. Every other time they simply told me I had a light out, a couple of times that they were looking for a similar vehicle in the same town in New Mexico and a few times for speeding where they did not write a ticket. I am nice and hand over the documentation, I assume that is the responsibllity of being allowed to operate a vehicle...but I ain't going to grovel to get out of a ticket, the state can kiss my redneck arse.

They quickly turn in what could be a warning or a citation to a full blown felony within minutes.

Also creates the opportunity for malicious compliance. "Ok, he's on his way ..." Then he gets there 60-90 minutes later.
This claim gets repeated so much. Cops aren't in the habit of pulling someone over and then having a change of heart. The vast majority of the time, you are getting a ticket if you are pulled over, regardless of your demeanor. Everyone knows this.

Funny you say this.
The only time in my 25+ years of driving. I’ve gotten off with a ‘warning’ one time. And that was being pulled over for a bullshite reason and got a can of mace to the face.
I was given a warning and allowed to leave even though I could barely see.
Cops are ignorant

"Majority of the time." Well that means not 100% of the time. It does mean 100% of time when you have a shitty, combative demeanor.
