Has anyone here made the complete Route 66 trip? Was it worth it in modern day? How long did you take to hit the good spots? Did you start in Chicago or LA?

I don’t think you can take Route 66 in its entirety anymore.

Depends.

Are you gonna get your kicks there or bring 'em with you?

Been on portions of it - it's cool to see a bit of history, along with old forts and things that are in the western US.

We've done small chucks of it. Technically, it's can't be done anymore because sections of the original road are gone.

I will say this. If you try, put Shamrock, Texas on the stop list.

About 15 - 20 years ago Paul McCartney did it with his girlfriend.

They pulled into Oklahoma City unannounced and spent the night at the downtown Sheraton. Asked the concierge to set them up with a dinner reservation at a nearby restaurant. Of course, the word got out, but people respected their privacy.

In Oklahoma, it is no longer recognized as a US highway, but the original route is still marked with 66 signs.

I have been. Most of it has been cannibalized by I40, so you cant do "all" of it. More than that, though, it's been beaten down by the lack of traffic and much of it is run down. There are still some good stops along the way....just hop on and off for those.

I love road trips, but this is a route that doesn't seem necessarily that interesting to me. You have to remember that a lot of it will be spent in Illinois and Missouri.

Flagstaff, AZ is the best part of Route 66. South of Flagstaff is one of the most beautiful drives in America.

Never considered this but that’s an interesting route. What other highways are pretty cool to do from start to finish?

Part of 66 goes through a small town in Az called Oatman. There are 2 or 3 restaurants lots of souvenir shops. And donkeys roam the street all the time.

I’m half joking, but I seriously think it could be interesting to spend a few days cruising this from top to bottom, if you haven’t really seen the whole state outside of the more known cities.

I have done it a couple times- make sure you go east to west, that's the superior way

Make sure to stop in Oatman

Plan your own route. That’s half the fun. Million dollar Hwy. Hwy 24 & 12 in Utah. 64 in New Mexico. California Hwy 1 3 299, Hwy 12 in Idaho. It’s easier now than ever. And tent camp as much as possible.

Did a few stops in Arizona. Williams near the Grand Canyon, and Winslow Arizona has a monument to the eagles song there.

Also stopped with the kids at the teepee hotels that the Cars movie was apart of. Pretty cool.
