Rouses breaks ground on market in north Baton Rouge

LINK

Rouses Markets executives and Baton Rouge leadership broke ground on a new store at the intersection of Florida Boulevard and North Ardenwood Drive on Thursday, a location that city leaders say will help redevelop a major street and make a dent in the food deserts of North Baton Rouge.

"We want to build the finest store we can," CEO Donny Rouse said. "That's what the community expects from us. This store is going to have every offering that every other Rouses does. It's an area that needs a store."

The 44,000-square-foot freestanding store, set to open in summer 2023, will anchor a revitalized Ardenwood Shopping Center. That size is on par with the Thibodaux-based grocery chain's 10 existing stores throughout metro Baton Rouge, Rouse said.

The Florida Boulevard store will feature the amenities found in other Rouses locations, such as a range of fresh and prepared foods, with a focus on Louisiana-made products. The store will offer online shopping and curbside pickup.

The market will be several blocks closer than the nearest grocery stores to parts of North Baton Rouge — an Albertsons, Calandro's and Shoppers Value on Government Street or the Hi Nabor on Winbourne Avenue.

Forgetting the name of the store but several yrs ago, 5-6 mabe 7, a major chain grocery store opened with a lot of similar fanfare in the same area. Three yrs later it closed, claiming shrinkage (theft) problems & difficulty keeping employees due to employee safety concerns.

That place will make a nice strip mall one day, with a weave shop, CBD store, Payday loan store and a Cricket Wireless.

Albertsons? It's still open. The only other store on Florida that I know of that opened around then was the Hi Nabor in the redeveloped Broadmoor shopping center, and that's still open as well.

Maybe you are thinking of LeBlancs, but they were all turned into Rouses. A lot of their customers are pissed about it too.

So you don't remember the name of the store but know the intimate details as to why it closed?

I don't see how Rouses and Albertsons can coexist so close to each other. One of them is going to close.

ETA: My money is on Albertsons shutting down. They are kind of an also-ran in the Baton Rouge market, even though they manage some of their stores very well.

Government street is north Baton Rouge now

Sad how people on here try to say mid city isn’t the ghetto

Their plate lunch business will do well there. It's right between BREC's HQ and La Dept of Agriculture. And I think the big Gerry Lane dealers are pretty close.

As far as the grocery business....not so sure. But Rouses tends to do well everywhere, even in their sketchy New Orleans neighborhoods. They have successful locations in far worse areas.

No way. In the BR market Albertsons crushes Rouses. Rouses is garbage here.

It’s really scary that the company that funded the January 6 insurrection is encroaching into bipoc neighborhoods like mid city

You are right about that. Rouses is a big step down from the old LeBlanc's stores that they bought.

The new one they built out on Airline isn't bad though. I haven't been to the one out on Denham Springs. I guess Oak Point and Carters are the favorite local stores in that direction.

the government Albertsons is very well run and probably the best Albertsons in BR. Rouses is so fast growing, they have the management problem.
