Was he targeted or was this a random home invasion?

Early indications are it was a random robbery. He was shot in his yard. They don't believe he was targeted at this time.
ETA: Not a big deal, but point of clarification: He was a Travis County Sheriff's Deputy that lived in Williamson County/Round Rock.

Wow. Round Rock always seemed like an extremely nice place. When I lived in Temple I had to drive to Round Rock to do any banking. Unfortunately that was the closest Region's. Never would've thought this would happen there.

The house I used to live in, in Round Rock, after I moved out the next person who moved in killed my former neighbor's daughter and buried her in the back yard. One if the only high profile murders in that city.
Very quiet, very low crime.

You never thought murder would happen in a town of 120,000?

120k white flight suburbanites. Round Rock makes the North Shore look like a gritty urban neighborhood.

Round Rock is like upper middle class honkeytopia.

I know. But murder happens in the Hamptons, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Martha's Vineyard, etc.

Was apparently planning on retiring in September after 32 years. Awful

Round Rock is 54% white.

According to citydata.com (which has the most up-to-date demographic info), RR is 54% white, 29% hispanic, 10% black, and 5% asian. Either way, RR is a very safe place and a murder there, much less of a police officer, is shocking.

Incorrect. Round Rock has gone the way of Pflugerville. Most of the low income minorities have been moving in. Read all the stories in the news about Austins' declining black population, they're all just moving to Round Rock. It's gotten much worse recently.
White flight does not exist in Austin, it's been a reverse-white flight situation for the past 15 years, with whites moving closer into the city, and into minority dominated neighborhoods. That in turn has sent minorities to the old white flight areas of Round Rock. However, not so much in Cedar Park and Leander.

Cedar Park seems to be trending downward. I like bee cave and Lakeway area a lot. Most of west Travis county is nice.

In certain parts....why the city keeps allowing new apartments is beyond me. But it has much better elementary and middle schools than Round Rock, and that still brings in the white demographic.

Yep. It's extremely clean and new. There is a water park there that costs $10 for adults and $8 for kids and little to no trashy folks in it.

I wouldn't categorize it as white flight. Are you familiar with Austin's demographics at all? It's the opposite of white flight.
