I prefer Movado

I’m not really a watch guy and I even know that’s a troll

My wife bought me a Movado for an anniversary gift several years ago for around $1300. She had been after me about having a nice watch for years but I thought my Nixon Player watch was good enough.

I got my fancy watch and joined watch you seek forum and that’s when I learned about that middle of the mall shite .

Hell even I made fun of her. Then she bought me a Hamilton X-Wind and an Omega two years later.

I’ve watched my Rolex double in price over the last 2.5 years. Can’t complain.

Yeah I’d take the cash and invest it. If I showed up to my “no collar” workplace wearing a Rolex I’d get my arse laughed at in the software industry

Steel Daytonas I think are like 18k.

Retail for a SS Daytona is $14,550, the going price for an unworn one on the gray is over $40k. The white dial runs about $2k more than the black dial.

Black dial is down in the 30's now. SS Daytona has gone down big time in the last 45 days.

Market is not sustainable at the ridiculous secondary market prices

I like Rolex, but when you can get a Vacheron Overseas for the same price, and a Breguet or Blancpain for considerably less...

The LARGE majority of Rolex owners feel the brand is the absolute pinnacle of timepieces in quality and reliability. Marketing has much to do with this thought. The Rolex sub is the first purchase by many to show the world you "made it/are successful". Some owners may know of other brands, but would not consider them as they feel they do not have the name cache.

Now true collectors /connoisseurs will own various brands, and know Patek, AP, VC are of higher quality /refinement despite not being as recognizable to the masses.

Nope and I only expect it to get worse as we head towards Summer. Anyone that wants to buy a Rolex on the secondary market have patience. Prices are going to continue to fall for Daytona, Pepsi GMT, Green Bezel Sub, etc.

Submariner now sits around 14k. They were going for 16+ for a while. Watch Limit on Chrono24. Although many of these sellers have to source the watch after purchase it seems.

Chrono24

Great for trying to find a more rare piece, not great for any value purchase. Many listing are overpriced and have been listed months and still available.

Yep I wouldn’t buy on Chrono24 if I were going gray

It’s been an awesome thing to own. I almost never wear it any more. So many milestones in my life wearing it. Graduated wearing it, married, 2 sons, all professional accomplishments, buried all my grandparents and my Dad wearing it. Will be a pleasure to pass along to my son. The appreciation in value is a bonus.

I’m not sure if I like the Pepsi. RB TT is too much for me. I just called my AD to put me in line for a SS Daytona so let’s see how many months/years. I also got in the list for silver overseas but if I get a Daytona before then I may just cancel

I work at the bank and I notice watches. There is some truth to the submariner being owned by poors. Of course, they are not poor, but they are the crowd with much lower income than you would expect for their spending. A lot of people who barely crack 100k.

A Rolex Sub is a much smarter purchase for someone making 100k than a 60k truck, and I’m sure a lot of you judging Rolex owners own vehicles in that ballpark.

Yep. Just like 90% of the people in this thread would no longer have the "$3,000 given to them after graduation", but still have the watch if given them........

I have a stainless steel date just. I never wear it anymore. It costs over $600 every 3-5 years for a "tune up" and keeps horrible time.

I am likely going to sell it. It is the entry version of Rolex watches and likely not worth a whole lot. I guess I have outgrown wearing watches at 57.

Only needs to be serviced every 10 years or until it stops working. Sounds like you need a competent watch maker. My dad went 20 years between servicing on his Sub. Rolex 3135 movements are as robust and bulletproof as any mechanical movement.

If it's needing a "tune up" every three to 5 years, then whomever you have servicing it is fleecing you. Send it to Rolex Service Center Dallas and you'll have whatever overhaul or repairs done right and they will stand by it, and it won't need to go in every 3-5 years and they will have it keeping time within it's specs.

According to the websites listed in the thread, I could sell my submariner I bought in 1999 for $2100 (used) for 8-10k? Is that right? I rarely wear it.

Depends. If it is from 1999 it is a U or A serial. If A serial it has either hollow end links or solid end links. That is going to matter to some people. Do you have the original box and papers? That also will add value to some people. Does the dial say 'Swiss' or 'Swiss Made' at bottom of 6 o'clock? You should be able to sell it for 7k to 8k easily.
