‘Tens of Thousands’ of Driverless Trucks to Haul Freight on Highways in Coming Years
quote:
“Tens of thousands” of fully autonomous tractor-trailers are expected to haul freight on public roads in upcoming years, and plans are in place to begin with 20 driverless trucks in Texas in 2024.
Though the test runs have only been on simulated roads at lower speeds or public roads with human failsafe operators on board, Aurora plans to transport loads on Texas’s Interstate 45 between Dallas and Houston with 20 driverless trucks by the end of 2024.

I am 100% behind self driving but seems like you could pick a better spot to try this.

And people wonder why youngsters are becoming more & more communist

I feel like this will be disastrous but I also realize most humans absolutely suck at driving anyway

I wonder if people will frick with them like they do the robotaxis?

Seems like we would perfect autonomous driving with personal vehicles before we let big rigs loose. But maybe I am being unreasonable.

Go ahead and put me down for this being much safer than human drivers.

Isn't that the deadliest stretch of road in all of America. Great place to test these out in

Gonna go full max overdrive

Just wait until we get AI trucks driving 55 mph, passing other AI trucks driving 54.8 mph on 2 lane freeways. That’s when we know the singularity is real.

They probably won’t pass at all, so I’m looking forward to 100% robot trucks.

While I have my reservations, I 100% agree. Perhaps driving in BR has me jaded…but I’ve lost a lot of hope in humanity recently.
Everyone seems to not give a frick and do what they please when they please. That coupled with distractions as well as being actual terrible drivers and no wonder we have the highest insurance premiums. (Although I don’t think we are terribly different than anywhere else)
Today sitting at a red light, a guy was in the far left lane on Hennessy at the light at Essen (leaving the hospital) he messed up and wanted to cross over and go straight onto Summa. The light turns green and he proceeds to sit and hold up everyone behind him until it turned yellow and he could proceed and cut across 2 lanes once traffic stopped turning….just infuriating

With 25 laser, radar, and camera sensors, the truck can “see” obstacles in the road from a quarter-mile out and then switch to an unobstructed lane without any instruction or manipulation from a human

You’re almost there. Our premiums aren’t higher because people drive worse or get in more accidents compared to other states. Our premiums are higher because damage awards for similar injuries/treatment are far higher in Louisiana than most other states. It’s a game where the plaintiff attorneys are sending their clients for enough treatment to exhaust whatever policy limits are applicable, but not for too much treatment that they waste too much money paying the doctors and reducing the plaintiff’s payout.
The doctors are also in on it. As long as they give an opinion that all of their treatment was necessitated by the accident, regardless of how minor the collision or for how long their patient complained of pain, they’ll get their bill paid out of the settlement.
Since it’s possible for a plaintiff to get a judgment for more than the defendant’s policy limits, if an insurance company doesn’t settle and protect their insured, the insurance company will then get sued by their insured to cover the excess judgment.
Those billboards don’t just materialize out of nowhere. They come from six-figure monthly advertising budgets paid for with your premiums.

100% accurate. Pieces of shite have gotten me twice for Policy Limit settlements. I wanted to fight both but my own insurance company and my personal lawyer advised me to let them pay or face out of pocket payments.

Last time I looked at the stats, these self-driving vehicles had a higher accident rate.
