There was a BankOne branch on Highland that got robbed a bunch of times. Usually it's a bank near an interstate onramp (those are the most targeted gas stations as well.) But now that banks don't really deal in a lot of cash, and with the widespread usage of time locked safes that bank personnel can't even open if they wanted to... Easier just to steal a few hundred cartons of cigarettes and take them to NYC to sell.

I was actually investigated and interviewed by the FBI as a potential suspect for a series of bank armored car robberies back in 2008.
We were going through our Russian adoption which required $30k in brand new, unmarked US dollars in $100 or lower denominations. This followed a previous trip that had required the same for $10k.
Our bank had to order those bills in advance then I would go pick up the money to bring with us on our trip. 2 days before our final trip with the $30k, the armored vehicle carrying the bills ordered was robbed. This was the 2nd or 3rd robbery of an armored vehicle in the DFW area in a matter of months.
Obviously, my transactions ordering large sums of money in new, unmarked bills was a major red flag for the FBI and they weren’t thrilled that I had plane tickets and a visa to visit Russia for the 3rd time within 2 days of the robbery. It wasn’t fun to walk into my office to find some agents waiting to have a little chat
On top of that, I still needed the 30k in new, unmarked bills by the next day so we could finalize our adoption. Luckily, the FBI was satisfied with all the documents I had outlining why we had ordered the cash and the adoption. Our bank then went above & beyond working with all banks within the DFW region to compile $30k in new, unmarked bills by the next day.

Locally a young fella who was 5’11” and 245 donned a wig, dress, and makeup, walked into a nearby post office, showed a gun, and made off with the money. He had played DL on the HS football team at one point. He was arrested much later but was freed on lack of evidence….no gun found.

The saying was it's much easier to rob a bank with a pen than a gun.
My childhood friend tried the pen route, he ended up with 2 years in the federal clink. He and the loan manager, who was good friends with my brother, both got busted for embezzling money and some faulty loan scheme.

some guy tried to rob the armored truck guy bringing cash into the branch. Truck driver walks into the bank with the bags of money. Robber walks in behind him and pulls a gun Teller sees the gun and screams Truck driver pulls his gun, turns around, and shoots the robber three times center mass.
I’ve always heard don’t frick with the armored truck workers, they’re better trained than you would think

A friend of mine was a public defender. He said it was surprisingly easy to rob a bank and get away with it. The problem came when they got away with it, that they tried it again. If you just stopped at one bank, your chances were higher than you'd think, but more than one was where people got caught. He also said the take wasn't that great. Just a few thousand in cash these days.

I would think the easiest banks to rob would be small branches in rural towns, particularly towns with no police force under sheriffs jurisdiction.

The amount banks lose on fraud is staggering.
Seems like the penalty is much less also, which drives me crazy. I hate hearing what the punishment is when watching American Greed, because it never seems enough.

The public ones publish their fraud reserve in their SEC filings every year. Once I understood how much even a mid major bank lost to pen based fraud, I realized why they didn't give a lot shits about how many times production LPAR data from the mainframe got copied around internally. The fraud reserve starts in the high eight figures at a lot of mid sized banks, IIRC.

Two of my buddies robbed the Farmer's and Mechanic's Bank of La Grange. Those chose a date when the farm subsidy checks go out because the bank is loaded with cash in the drawers for all the farmers coming in to cash their checks.
They didn't get caught, but they did turn themselves in later for some stupid reason.

My neighbor actually robbed a bank and got away on a bike. Wearing a clown mask.
He went a month before the police found out it was him.
I watched as they raided his house.

In 1974, a bunch of citizens chased down four bank robbers who robbed the Caddo Mills, Texas bank. Two of the robbers were state troopers, the two others were former state troopers holding other law enforcement jobs.
