Can anyone help explain the thought process here?
What they did was take a 4 lane road and turn it into two lanes at the intersection only. I am already starting to see the problems were going to have here when heading East on government in the right lane and you need to keep going straight and realized you cant get over.

Additionally, what is the plan @ government and lobdell. I pass that intersection everyday and still cant figure out what the plan it.

Road diet. They are stupidly reducing Government from 4 lanes to two with left turn lanes. The concept was to make it more pedestrian friendly and less of a highway thoroughfare, which is idiotic. Once the CATS busses return, it will become impassable and businesses along its route not killed by the years of construction will be starved by reduced vehicle traffic as people avoid the area like the plague due to the buses clogging up the travel lanes stopping for 2 minutes every 100 feet.

Lobdell intersection is being turned into a giant traffic circle.

I know we’ve been through this before but the road is already a two lane road since there’s not a left turn lane.

If there’s an intersection in BR that would benefit from this it’s that one. Such a terrible light cycle for a rather moderately busy intersection.

Except you can often use that left lane to avoid the idling bus in the right lane.

Yes. Without a dedicated left turn lane. So the inside lane is largely a left turn lane.

The removal of the bus route on government during the construction has been nice… And I will agree with you on this front. Can’t believe they didn’t add bus cut outs

Do you mean roundabout? Two different things. I believe this one will be a roundabout.

And I’ve driven down government nearly every day for the last 15. I’m always weaving back and forth between lanes to account for vehicles waiting to turn left.

It’s noticeably “bad” between Eugene and Foster.

All you have to do is drive to one of the several locations along Government that you can rent a bike via phone app and ride the bike down government to whichever store you desire. But you people would rather get on here and bitch about progress.

I think the stretch between Foster and Jefferson may remain 4 lanes, but it’s supposed to mostly be 2 with turn lanes. It’s going to be an absolute traffic nightmare once finished and the CATS bus routes are restored. This project will ruin one of Baton Rouge’s few truly great safe, walkable, and drivable neighborhoods. The big draw in Mid City was how easy breezy traffic was to get to most places you’d need to go. Once this is over, it will be crippling.

Traffic count and speed data in other locations across the country with this set up suggest otherwise.

Not bitching about the progress, do you need help with reading comprehension?

That’s not true.
A two lane road has just two lanes. Example-Claycut.
A four lane road has four lanes allowing for safe passing.

The change is not inconsequential.

Jefferson @ lobdell would be a better place for a traffic circle IMO, but glad one is going down at government.

The studies I saw all dealt with roads with less than half the traffic count of government street. If you have studies with more comparable numbers, by all means, please provide them.

Don’t forget that relative to most cities, Baton Rouge has comparatively little redundancy in its road grid, meaning there aren’t many alternative routes to get places. Running parallel to Govt are North Blvd, Florida Blvd, Claycut/Goodwood, and North St. Both Norths end at Foster. Caycut is a little two lane road with lots of stop signs and peters out before reaching Eugene.

Florida Blvd is a true east/west highway and really the only alternative route, but getting south of Florida to Jefferson is often a problem due to Lobdell being a clusterf$ck between Jefferson and Government. Why? Because despite its high traffic count, Lobdell is only 3 lanes wide between Goodwood and Jefferson and the light at Jefferson is really poorly sequenced causing Lobdell to backup.
